📢 Join Us for Open House Night!
Date: Thursday, October 8th

Location: Main Campus & Gymnasium

We invite all students, families, and community members to join us for our annual Open House! Come out for a fun and engaging evening where you can:

• Meet the Teachers: Visit classrooms, introduce yourself, and learn about what your child will be exploring this school year.

• Tour the School: Take a walk through our halls and explore our learning spaces.

• LEGO STEAM Challenges: Head down to the Gymnasium to participate in exciting, hands-on LEGO STEAM activities for all ages!

Photo Day
Tuesday September 29/26 was Photo Day at Centennial.  Each student should have come home with a post card that had a QR Code to view their proofs. The proofs are now available online.  If your student did not come home with a post card or has maybe misplaced it, please call into the office and we will be able to help you out.  Photo Retake day will be Tuesday October 20/26.

Terry Fox
Centennial PS has a proud history of supporting the Terry Fox foundation in raising money for cancer research. Each grade team has been challenged to raise $600 towards our $1800 school goal. We are providing some donation links for each grade as well as a general link in case you have more than one student at the school. Together, we can do this!   The students will be participating in the Terry Fox Run on Thursday October 8/26.

Your child’s Hearing and Vision should be screened every year. A fee of $25.00 is collected to help offset the cost of bringing this clinic to your school

Why Screening Matters:

• Growing children are very susceptible to middle ear problems and one of the best ways to prevent hearing loss is early detection of middle ear function issues.

•  Vision issues are common in children, so early detection is crucial for their healthy development and academic success.

Our screening program helps identify hearing and vision concerns before they impact learning and social development, ensuring children get the support they need to thrive. As part of the program, we will refer any results that are considered outside the normal range to the parents for follow-up with their physician and/or optometrist.

For hearing concerns, we recommend bringing your child’s result form to your physician, who can then refer you to an ENT specialist, which is covered by OHIP. Alternatively, you have the option to schedule an appointment with an Audiologist without needing a referral from your family physician. Please note that visits to an Audiologist may not be covered by OHIP, and you could incur a fee ranging from $75 to $150 or more.

Your child's hearing is not being monitored unless they're seeing an audiologist or an ENT specialist, making our screening program a valuable resource for your child's health. While eye exams are covered by OHIP, our hearing clinic offers a basic vision screening for students participating in the hearing clinic.

Costume Bike Parade
SATURDAY OCTOBER 17TH 1:00 PM
IN THE GELLERT PARKING LOT

Join us for the 3rd annual spooktacular Halloween Costume Bike Parade. Dress up in your Halloween costumes, hop on your bikes and join the bike parade though Gellert Park. This event is meant to be fun for all ages. You don’t need to be a kid to dress up and join the parade.  Decorate your bike too for added impact. Prize categories include:

• children up to and including grade 3

• Grade 4 and older

• Best Family

Of course there will be Halloween treats for everyone. And our Halloween-themed photo booth will be open for some memorable shots. This free event is organized by the volunteers at Halton Hills Active Transportation/Bike It Team

HDSB Parent Involvement Committee (PIC)
The HDSB Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) invites parents/guardians and community members to attend the upcoming Parent Involvement Committee Conference on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Elsie MacGill Secondary School in Milton.

The theme for this year’s event is Get Connected. Parents/guardians are invited to explore practical workshops on Student Mental Health and Well Being, Special Education, Generative AI and Social Media, Literacy, Mathematics, School Pathways, Equity and Inclusion. Come learn, connect and discover ways to support student success. Registration is now open for this free event, including childcare, a light lunch and transportation within Halton Region.

Reminder: Students Returning from Appointments

This is a friendly reminder that students are required to check back into the office when they return to school from an appointment.

Checking in with the office allows us to update the student’s attendance record and confirm that they have safely returned to school.

Nutrition Break Pick Ups

We kindly ask that, whenever possible, you plan to pick up your child outside of our nutrition break times. During these breaks, many students are outside, making it difficult for staff to quickly locate individual students.

Our nutrition break times are:

• Morning Nutrition Break: 10:15–10:55 a.m.

• Afternoon Nutrition Break: 12:55–1:35 p.m.

We appreciate your cooperation in planning pick-ups outside of these times whenever possible. This helps us ensure that we can locate students efficiently and maintain proper supervision during nutrition breaks.

Education is a partnership between parents, staff, and our broader community. Joining the School Council is a wonderful way to contribute to your child's educational experience, collaborate with school leaders, and help strengthen our school community.

Whether you want to hold an official role or simply drop in to stay informed, all parents and guardians are welcome to attend our meetings.

Key Roles Open for Nomination:

• General Council Members: Attend regular meetings, participate in discussions, and represent the parent community.

• Chair / Co-Chair: Prepare meeting agendas with the Principal, facilitate council meetings, and act as a main point of contact.

• Secretary: Record and distribute meeting minutes and maintain council records.

• Treasurer: Oversee council expenditures and present financial updates.

• Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) Rep: Represent Centennial at two HDSB regional meetings per year and share updates back with our council.

Scholars’ Hub - Grade 7 & 8 students
Scholars’ Hub is a free, in-person academic support initiative led by experienced Halton District School Board (HDSB) educators. Scholars’ Hub provides targeted academic support in a supportive, engaging learning environment.

Who Can Participate?

The program is open to Grade 7–8 students from elementary schools that feed into

Georgetown District High School, including:  Centennial PS, Ethel Gardiner PS, George Kennedy PS, Glen Williams PS, Harrison PS,  Joseph Gibbons PS, Park PS, Pineview PS, Silver Creek PS, Limehouse PS and Stewarttown Middle School.

Students will attend sessions at the secondary school their elementary school feeds into, helping them become familiar with the high school environment.

What Does the Program Offer?

• Focused support in literacy and numeracy in a welcoming, encouraging environment to build skills and confidence

• Homework help and guided practice

• Support for the transition to secondary school

• Smaller class sizes with individualized attention and meaningful learning support

Program Schedule

Scholars’ Hub is offered for five weeks, with students attending two sessions per week.

Location: Georgetown District High School

Time: 4:15-6:45 pm

Days: Monday and Wednesday

First session: October 5 - November 6

Help 400 HDSB Students Start School with Confidence
As students across our community head back to school, some will arrive without the basics they need: a backpack, school supplies, or even lunch. The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF), thanks to our generous community, is here to help.

HLF launched its Back-to-School campaign, with the help of its cheerful helper, Carrie the Backpack, to support 400 HDSB students by September 30. Families are counting on this support, and HLF is asking our generous community to step in urgently so they can continue to say “YES” to every request for emergency support they receive.

Here's what one parent shared about what saying “YES” meant to her family:

“Just wanted to say how grateful I am for this support. I’m a single mom, and because of your help, I’m able to get what my daughter needs for back-to-school and food, and I’m so unbelievably grateful for the support.”

Free Screening of Screenagers Generation AI  If you are able, please include the following in your school newsletter (grades 4 and above) On Wednesday, Sept. 23, we are offering two screenings of Screenagers: Generation AI at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The film examines how artificial intelligence has rapidly entered the lives of young people and what it means for their relationships, learning and well-being. The free screenings are at Film.ca Cinemas Oakville  (171 Speers Rd.) and open to parents/guardians, educators, interested community members and students in Grade 4 and above.

Grade 8 2nd Nutrition Break 

Grade 8 students will be permitted to leave school property during the 2nd Nutrition Break (NB), provided they have signed parent/guardian permission.Grade 8 students will come home with the procedure for caregivers to provide permission. Students will be able to start leaving for 2nd nutrition break on Mon Sept 14th.

Orders for these days will be due by Monday September 21/26. There will be no orders accepted after the deadline. We also plan to have a variety of food days (such as Hero Burger/FB Burrito) on Fridays. These will pop up on School Cash Online closer to the dates. Please be reminded that all Centennial Food Days are fundraisers with proceeds going to STEAM, Literacy and Music Programs.

Carpool Drop Off & Buses
Due to major construction on Faludon, we are making immediate changes to our student drop-off and pick-up procedures to ensure everyone's safety.

Summary of Changes

• Bus Drop-off & Pick-up: Effective immediately, all school buses will drop off and pick up students directly in front of the school.

• Front Entrance Restrictions: The front entrance will be strictly reserved for buses during peak hours. A staff member will be posted at the entrance to manage traffic flow.

Bus-Only Hours (Front Entrance Closed to Regular Traffic)

• Morning: 8:00 AM – 8:15 AM

• Afternoon: 2:35 PM – 2:50 PM

Instructions for Parent Drop-off & Pick-up

• Please pull over along the side of the road near the bike racks.

• Drop off or pick up your child as close to the bike racks as possible so they can safely use the back entrance of the school.

• Do not attempt to enter the front driveway during the designated bus hours.

We understand these adjusted routes may cause temporary inconvenience, and we deeply appreciate your patience, cooperation, and support in keeping our students safe while construction is underway.

Join our Charger Team
We are currently growing our Lunchroom Supervision Team. Lunchroom Supervisors perform an important role in the school by monitoring students during nutrition break. Our nutrition breaks are 10.00-11.00 and 12.45-1.45. Those interested in the opportunity should reach out to Vice-Principal, Maggie Fay, via email fayma@hdsb.ca

Nut-Free Environment
Centennial Public School is a nut-free school to help keep all of our students safe and healthy. Some children in our community have life-threatening allergies to peanuts and tree nuts, and even small traces can cause a severe reaction. By creating a nut-free environment, we are working together to reduce the risk of accidental exposure.

This is a friendly reminder that September Start-Up Forms were due on or before September 24th. If you have not yet submitted your forms, you would have received an email today saying you have not.  Please do so as soon as possible.

Halloween Costumes & Dance
With Halloween approaching, we’d like to share how our school will be engaging and provide a few reminders to help make the day safe and enjoyable for everyone. Students will be participating in a Halloween Dance on Oct 30th: P2 Grade 6, P3 Grade 7, Grade 4 Grade 8.

Students are asked to bring in a non perishable food item or a loonie as entry to the dance. Proceeds will be donated to Georgetown Bread Basket. There is no expectation for your child to dress up in a costume. If your child chooses to dress in a costume, please help ensure their costume supports the positive and welcoming environment we strive for at our school.

 Costume Guidelines for School:

 ● Costumes should be fun and respectful.

 ● Costumes that mimic the traditional attire of an ethnic, religious, racial or gender group/identity are not  

    appropriate. 

● Costumes that are overly frightening or intended to incite fear are not appropriate. 

● Replica weapons and masks should not be brought to school. 

Photo Day
Tuesday September 29/26 was Photo Day at Centennial.  Each student should have come home with a post card that had a QR Code to view their proofs. The proofs are now available online.  If your student did not come home with a post card or has maybe misplaced it, please call into the office and we will be able to help you out.  Photo Retake day will be Tuesday October 20/26.  

Kernels for Chromebooks
We are thrilled to launch our newest school initiative - a Lumber Heads Popcorn Fundraiser running from October 7th to October 22nd to raise essential funds for new student Chromebooks! For $20, you'll receive 3 bags of delicious popcorn in your choice of 6 great flavours - all of which are vegan, halal, gluten-free, peanut-free, and dairy-free. Students are bringing home blue tracking sheets today to record orders from family, friends, and neighbors, and all final payments must be submitted digitally via School Cash Online (no cash will be collected at school). All order entries must be completed by October 22, 2026. Thank you for supporting our students and making Centennial awesome!

Important Reminder: Biking to School Guidelines
As part of our commitment to promoting active transportation and keeping our school community safe, we encourage students who live nearby to walk or ride their bikes to school!

To ensure the safety of all students, staff, and visitors, please review the following bike rules with your child:

Biking Safety & Expectations

1. Dismount on School Property:
   For safety reasons, no riding of bicycles, scooters, or skateboards is permitted on school grounds. Students must dismount at the school boundary and walk their bikes to and from the bike racks.
   
   

2. Bring a Lock & Secure Your Bike:
   All bicycles brought to school must be parked in the designated bike racks and locked securely with a personal bike lock.
   
   

3. Respect Others' Property:
   Students are expected to only touch, ride, or tune their own bicycles. Respecting others' property helps prevent accidental damage and keeps everyone’s bike ready for the ride home.
   
   

4. Wear a Properly Fitted Helmet:
   Ontario law requires all riders under 18 to wear an approved bicycle helmet. Please ensure your child wears and properly fastens their helmet on every ride.

In accordance with HDSB safety guidelines, the school and the Halton District School Board cannot accept responsibility for damaged, lost, or stolen bicycles or transportation equipment. Families choose to allow their children to ride to school at their own discretion and risk.

Executive Functioning Learning Strategy Drop-in Sessions for Grades 7-12 

These sessions are presentation-style and are offered bi-monthly, after school (4-4:45pm). Topics include: time management, planning and organization, attention strategies, stress management, procrastination, study strategies and test-taking skills. Additionally, specific strategies for: note-taking, reading textbooks, and organizing ideas for writing are offered. 

No registration is required. Students can join the Google meeting link with their HDSB emails at the time of the session at 4:00pm.  Please see the attachment below for a list of session topics, dates and the link to join.

The HDSB Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) invites parents/guardians and community members to attend the upcoming Parent Involvement Committee Conference on Saturday, October 24, from 9 am to 3:30 pm at Elsie MacGill Secondary School in Milton.

The theme for this year’s event is Get Connected. This free event will feature informative workshops, community partners and displays, and a Brunch and Learn session for collaboration and networking.

Childminding is available at no cost for Kindergarten-age children up to 12 years of age. Morning refreshments and lunch are also provided. Transportation may be available for attendees who require it to travel from various areas within Halton to the conference. Learn more and register on the HDSB website.
