Community Support

As part of an enhanced learning experience in the Halton District School Board, students in elementary and secondary schools learn about the importance of social justice by participating in fundraising campaigns and supporting global and local efforts.

Through these experiences students learn about values such as accountability, relationships and engagement – values that, among others, guide the Board’s 2020-2024 Multi-Year Plan.

Let us know what your schools do to show you care by using the hashtag #HDSBcares on social media!

The following are examples of how schools and staff have supported, and continue to support, fundraising campaigns and their local communities:

Since starting their support of the Terry Fox Run decades ago, Halton District School Board schools have raised more than $5.2 million for cancer research. The total raised by our schools in the 2024 Terry Fox runs was $235,371.69.

In 2017, the Halton District School Board raised more than $309,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, through its Jump Rope for Heart program, with more than 6,100 students participating.

Oakville Trafalgar High School raised $214, 245.00 in support of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life Youth campaign on May 24th 2019, which was a record amount for a youth-led event. The majority of the school’s 1000-plus students took part in a 12-hour daytime event to remember and support those who are affected by cancer.

Since 2003, 10 schools in the Halton District School Board have hosted Relay For Life events and have collectively raised a total of $2,088,302.00 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

In 2018-2019, HDSB schools raised $4,334.94 to support UNICEF projects to areas in most need around the world.

In 2018-2019, school events such as dances, gift sales and barbeques raised $22,000 for the Halton Learning Foundation to help ensure vulnerable HDSB students had basic necessities such as food, clothing and school supplies. Annually, HLF provides about $250,000 in emergency funds to help HDSB students overcome financial barriers to learning.

Every year, staff and students participate in a campaign to fundraise for the United Way of Halton and Hamilton. Even in this challenging year, the HDSB raised $50,357.75 for their local community.
