Dear TAB Community,

Congratulations to the girls Dance Team on their accomplishments. Not only did they win the team award but they secured many individual awards as well. They do an excellent job representing our school in a very positive manner.

I have had many students in grades 9 to 11 asking about the Minister of Education’s recent announcement about attendance. At the present time we are waiting for future information from the Minister concerning the implementation of his announcement concerning attendance and student achievement.

On Wednesday April 22nd a number of students have organized a Stem Cell drive in co-operation with Canadian Blood Services. Grade 11 and 12 students who are 17 years of age and older may participate with your permission. One of the Canadian Blood Services staff members will be on site to take cheek swabs and add those names to their database for possible stem cell donation. Whether or not your student participates is entirely a family decision.

Have a great weekend Tigers!

Tigers Saving Gorillas! Eco Club E-Waste Initiative
Our Eco Club is in the second week of collecting E-waste in partnership with The Toronto Zoo to support their “PhoneApes Program”. We are collecting donations of old cell phones, computer monitors, tablets/ipads, keyboards, mice, laptops or other electronic scrap. All donations from the event will be recycled responsibly and proceeds help reduce the demand for mining in the Congo which helps preserve the delicate ecosystem of the Lowland Gorilla which is an endangered species. TAB Tigers are doing their part during the month of “APE-ril” to protect valuable resources and create a sustainable future. If you have old cell phones or laptops, or small e-waste etc. please send it with your student next week or drop it off at the main office. Deadline is Friday April 24th.

Athletics Update

We've had a wonderful start to the Spring Season and a great end to our Early Spring Season this week. The weather cooperated nicely and it was great to see so many family members out watching and supporting our athletes. A reminder that the schedules are all posted on HSSAA.ca if you'd like to follow along.

Badminton
Congratulations to Addi Butler for placing 3rd at HSSAA and she now moves on to represent Blakelock at GHAC next week. Kris Ding placed 3rd in the very competitive Open category.

Girls Touch Football
The girls played so well all season and qualified for the tier 1 playoffs. They won their quarterfinal game  38-6. Unfortunately they lost a close one in the semis, earning them a tie for 3rd place finish to their season.

Girls Rugby
The girls won their season opener against Iroquois Ridge this week and also played at an invitational tournament at McMaster University. All girls from grades 9 to 12 got a lot of playing time and had a great day.

Boys Rugby
The boys had a great start to their season with a tie against Iroquois Ridge. They also had their junior tournament Friday and a senior tournament on Thursday. A busy start to their season!

Girls Soccer
The girls opened their season with a 4-0 win against Milton District High School.

Boys Soccer
The juniors have their first game next week. The senior boys won their season-opener against Iroquois Ridge 3-2.

The Tigers have started strong this spring and we are really excited about the next few weeks of great spring sports!

The Dance Team wrapped up an incredible competition season this year, showcasing their talent, dedication, and hard work on every stage. Attending two competitions, the team achieved outstanding success, earning multiple first-place finishes across their categories. At their first competition, they were also awarded Overall Best Large Group. An impressive accomplishment that reflects both their skill and teamwork!

In addition to their top scores, the team received several Judges’ Choice Awards, including recognition for favourite choreography and overall impression, highlighting the creativity and performance quality of their routines.

This season’s success would not have been possible without the vision and commitment of our talented choreographers—Tessa Collins, Alexis Fung, Sierra Park and Kate Puhlmann—as well as the dedication of every team member: Xee Aprile, Isabel Dindayal, Annabelle Doiu, Janelle Luc, Katelyn Lynam, Lauren Urie & Maya Urie.

Congratulations to all team members on an exceptional season. We look forward to seeing what you achieve next!

Homestay Hosts Needed in Halton
Each year, the HDSB’s International Student Program (ISP) welcomes students into schools, and as a result, our programs benefit, our community benefits and local students create lifelong friendships and global connections. Canada Homestay Network (CHN) is currently looking for hosts in Halton for international students joining the HDSB during the 2026-2027 school year.

The HDSB has received a strong number of applications for the 2026-2027 school year, including several students who will be staying for a shorter period of approximately three to four months. This creates a great opportunity for families who may be interested in short-term hosting.

Hosting an international student is a unique and rewarding experience. You'll give a young learner a life-changing opportunity while creating lasting memories for your own family. As a host, you provide a private bedroom, three daily meals, access to WiFi and laundry and a welcoming, supportive and safe home. CHN offers full training, 24/7 support and a monthly stipend.

CHN will be hosting two virtual information sessions for families interested in learning more about becoming a homestay host:

For more information about becoming a host for an international student, please visit the Become a Homestay Host webpage of the HDSB website (hdsb.ca) or contact hostinfo@canadahomestaynetwork.ca, call 1-877-441-4443 or visit: https://whyihost.ca

Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) Month is here! April 2026 is the third annual HLF Month and HDSB schools and community members are coming together to help raise awareness and funds for the financial support, provided by HLF, that many HDSB students need to fully engage in learning such as school supplies, food and clothing.

Each year, HLF supports more than 3,000 students in the HDSB by providing financial support that removes educational barriers and providing the essential resources students need to focus on schoolwork and thrive to their full potential. HLF’s goal is to ensure that they can continue to say ‘yes’ to every request for support received.

Families can learn more about the Halton Learning Foundation and how to support HLF Month by visiting the HLF Month webpage on the HLF website (haltonlearningfoundation.ca).

Are you an HDSB parent/guardian who could use some help? If you are an HDSB parent/guardian who needs assistance, please contact your child’s teacher or principal.

Dear TAB Community,

Last evening the Music Department held their concert and fundraiser, "Music Night In". Thank you to the parent volunteers for all their efforts in organizing another very successful evening. Without their help and support it would be impossible to organize and run such a wonderful event. We would also like to thank the many local Oakville businesses for their support.

They donated hundreds of items for the silent auction which raises money for the Music department to purchase new instruments. Their donations are greatly appreciated. Please shop locally to demonstrate  that we as a community appreciate their support.

Thank you to our music teachers and students who put in many hours of practice. Their dedication and talent were on stage last night and provided excellent entertainment to the audience!

Good luck to the girls football team who will be playing a quarter final game against Craig Keilburger on Monday morning. If they win, our girls will be moving on to the semi-finals. All the games will be played on April 13th at Dr.Frank J.Hayden Secondary School.

On Wednesday April 15th, the Wind Ensemble and Senior Band will be on their way to Quebec City for their annual trip. Safe travels and enjoy one of the oldest cities in our country with a rich history!

Wednesday next week is a busy day for co-curricular sports:

  • Our Dance Crew will be travelling to Milton to compete at the Milton Performing Arts Centre
  • Both our Junior and Senior Soccer teams will be playing at River Oaks Park starting at 4:15pm
  • Senior Girls Rugby will be competing at the Bronte Athletic Field against IRHS at 4:15pm

Thursday will be a little quieter, but the following teams will be playing:

  • Senior Girls will be competing in an all day Rugby tournament at McMaster
  • Junior and Senior Rugby teams will be competing in an all day tournament at Redeemer university.
  • Senior Girls Soccer will be playing against Milton District at the Bronte Field at 3:30pm.

Winding down the week on Friday:
Our Junior Badminton team will be playing a tournament at GWSS all day:0.

If you have time to stop in and catch some games, I am sure that our Tigers would very much appreciate your support in the cheering section!

Students who participate in those and many other activities are still expected to keep up their academic work,  submit assignments on time and write evaluations as per the classroom schedule.  Talk about time management skills…they have it covered!

Have a great weekend!

Principal
John Stevia

Courtesy Seat Application for 2026-27
Each year, families with children who are not eligible for school bus transportation to and from school, may apply for a courtesy seat. The HSTS Courtesy Seat online application will be open for submissions from April 15th to June 30th at 5:00 p.m.

HSTS will complete the courtesy seat application review and allocation process over the summer, in order to allow approved courtesy riders to begin riding the bus on the first day of school in September 2026. Parents and guardians will be advised of the status of their application by the 3rd week of August via email. Approved applicants can access their transportation schedule via the HSTS Parent Portal.

We would also kindly request families complete the HSTS Opt out form if your eligible children do not intend on using the school bus in 2026-27. This will allow HSTS the opportunity to assign as many courtesy seat riders as possible over the summer.

Students in the Spotlight
HLF’s signature fundraising event, Students in the Spotlight, is taking place on April 29 at 6:00 p.m. at Burlington Central High School. HDSB Students are getting ready and excited to showcase amazing performances in singing, musical, dance, visual arts, and other performances by secondary and elementary schools, while raising critical funds to help students in need across our board. This is our moment to come together to remove financial barriers and ensure every student can fully participate in school life ... A chance to step up to promote a culture of Kindness, Connection & Community in your school.

Dear TAB Community,

Two more short weeks. Students have been busy for the past four days. The Halton Skills Competition was this past Monday, TAB has 33 students competing in various events. Congratuations to students who participated and for the excellent way they represented our school. Special congratulations to our Gold and Bronze medal winners.

We are reviewing our Hall of Fame for September 2026. If you have time and would like to participate on the nomination committee, please send me your name and email address. The time commitment would be approximately 3 evening meetings during September October. If you know of T.A.B graduates who have made significant contributions in their field, please email me their names for consideration by the committee.

From now until the middle of May we have the privilege of hosting a number of student teachers from various educational facilities. This allows them to take the theories they have studied and turn them to a practical in class application under the guidance of our staff.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and we look forward to students returning to school on April 7th with revived energy and enthusiasm. It seems impossible but there are only 56 instructional days left for the 2025-2026 school year. Hopefully over the next few weeks we will see the return of warm weather, leaves on trees and shining sun!

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Dear TAB Community,

Lots of good news this past week. At the March 2nd Boundary Review Committee meeting, it was decided that T.A.B will continue to offer French Immersion for 2026-2027. This decision wil be reviewed prior to 2027-2028 and a decision made concerning the future of the program here at T.A.B. Now that we have made it possible for our students to enrol in our I-Stem program and continue in the French Immersion program and take our A.P courses, I am hoping that more grade 8’s will see that T.A.B is the place to be. We offer an excellent academic program, second to none.

Our student athletes have had an outstanding week. The varsity boys hockey team won against Garth Webb in overtime to earn Gold and become Tier 2 Champions! The girls hockey team played hard in the gold medal game against Garth Webb and in the end earned a Silver medal. I want to thank all the players for their dedication, their excellent sportsmanship and making all our students proud to be Tigers.

The TigerSharks had an outstanding showing at the OFSAA Swimming Championships in Windsor with 9 swimmers qualifying!! The Senior Boys team placed 3rd overall, and the team finished 20th in the province, marking an exceptional championship performance.

Zayden Dindayal led the way with a remarkable meet, capturing two Gold medals in the Senior Boys 50 Breaststroke and 100 Individual Medley. His 50 breaststroke swim set a new OFSAA record, highlighting an incredible performance.

Melanie Heuft also reached the top of the podium, winning Gold in the Senior Girls 50m breaststroke while setting a new OFSAA record with a powerful finish.

Several TigerSharks delivered strong performances throughout the meet, including Cameron Coxson, JJ Rubanovich, and Romeo Laberge, while both the Open Girls and Senior Boys relay teams raced with determination and teamwork. An exceptional championship and a proud moment for the TigerShark program!

In discussion with members of our School Retention Committee, we have planned a new program starting in September 2026. The program will be known as Excellence Beyond the Classroom (EBC) The program has been designed to meet the needs of students involved in elite athletics programs, the arts or other endeavours that require them to miss classes. As we complete the details I will communicate the plan to our community. Stay tuned.

Are you a cricket fan? Understand the game? Have some extra time? We are looking for a community cricket coach. For further information or an expression of interest please contact Ms.Zuberi who can be reached at zuberih@hdsb.ca,

I hope you have a great weekend!

Dear TAB Families,
Congratulations to the music students who performed at the music festival at Mohawk College over the last several days. Outstanding results with the Symphonic Winds earning Silver, Jazz Band earning Silver and the Wind Ensemble also earning a Silver+! A huge thank you to Ms.Abbott and Ms.Barry for all their work in getting students ready for these performances. Well done Tigers!

Some of the Winter sports teams are in the midst of their playoff runs. Boys hockey is going straight to the Finals next Friday. Our Girls hockey team is heading to the Semi-Finals on Tuesday! Bantam Girls Volleyball played on Thursday and are playing again today. The Swim team competed Thursday at GHAC with an excellent showing, we now have 7 swimmers heading to OFFSA in March! The Ski team is competing at the Blue Mountain OFSAA competition on Sunday and Monday and we will post their results next week. Sr.&Jr.Girls Volleyball had a great season but will not be advancing even though it was a very close quarter final. The boys basketball team also finished off their season strong. We are so proud of all our TAB sports teams who represent our school with excellence!

Spring sports will be starting soon and this year we will have the following teams: Jr.Girls Soccer, Sr.Girls Soccer, Girls Rugby, Boys Rugby, Girls Slow-Pitch, Boys Baseball, Track & Field, Tennis, Cricket and Flag Football. We are still looking for coaches for Jr.&Sr.Boys Soccer. If you are interested in coaching a great group of teenagers, please contact the school and we will put you in touch with our head of Physical Education who can provide you with more complete information.

Academically, students have settled in and it appears that they are doing outstanding work in their classes. On March 6th just prior to March Break we will be sending out 5th Week Reports to families for students who have marks below 60%, those with attendance concerns and students who are missing assignments. Most students are looking forward to March Break and a time to rest and recharge.

Our Drama department's first NTS Festival performance last night of the play “The Archetype” was a roaring success and next Tuesday they will move on to the National Competition at Burlington Central High School. Tickets are available to purchase at the door.

Department Highlight - I-STEM
This week was an eventful one for the I-STEM program at Blakelock, with many opportunities for experiential learning in both the Grade 9 and Grade 10 programs!

Grade 9
In grade 9 the students have been working hard on their Emerging Tech project. This project required students to craft a robot that is able to read and interpret a route marked out by black tape on the floor. There was a lot of learning across all four subjects that went into their final project. In Science students have been learning about electric circuits, and applying that knowledge to use an arduino, motion sensors and motors to pilot their robot. Tech of course overlapped heavily here, with students actually building, prototyping and testing their robots.

In Geography, students worked on natural disaster poster presentations, learned about how our climate is changing and the impacts of it on our future and explored emerging tech climate change solutions. They learned about sustainability and the impact our “stuff” has on the environment, as well as what an ecological footprint is, and used coding to create a carbon footprint calculator! They're wrapping up physical geo now with soil and rocks, where they’re going to make edible soil profiles. Last but not least, in math the students have been working hard on creating budgets in their finance unit, and are starting to go deeper into the world of numeracy.

The Grade 9 team is getting ready to launch their next big project, Human-Centered Design, with the help of Sheridan College! We look forward to seeing their next round of innovation!

Grade 10

Our grade 10 students have been working on a few projects for a long time now - the creation of their very own start-up, and a project given to them by the University of Waterloo. Students were given one of four projects. The first group of students have finally wrapped up their design for a Container for Hazardous Waste, the second learned the art of storytelling through Data Visualization, the third group focused on creating a prototype for a more sustainable food packaging solution, and the fourth group developed a Shark Tank style pitch to promote Apps to Change the World.

Meanwhile, to support their start-up project development we travelled to McMaster University to participate in a Hackathon. Students engaged in Human Centered Design to create a cast based on client need, and practiced an elevator pitch for their start-up project. They then had the opportunity to conference with upper year I-Bio-Med Students specializing in entrepreneurship, and develop an elevator pitch for their start-up project.

Other notable learning moments this week were drama games in English to support presentation skills, exploring all the careers it takes to create a book (students are writing a children's book about a scientific concept), labs labs and even more labs in science class (including some dissection), and in math class the students are diligently preparing for their next cycle quest on transformations in quadratics.

FASHION FORWARD OPEN HOUSES

Students are invited to attend open houses to select donated formal wear, at no cost, for their upcoming prom or graduation celebrations. Our first two events of the year are NEXT WEEK on February 24 and February 26 from 3:30-8:00pm at W.I.Dick in Milton (351 Highside Drive, Milton, ON L9T 1W8). An opportunity will be made available for gender diverse youth who prefer a private shopping experience between 3:00-3:30pm.

Town of Oakville Public Consultation - Potential Protest By-law Near Vulnerable Social Infrastructure
On behalf of the Town of Oakville, we are sharing an opportunity for Oakville residents to participate in a public consultation. The Town of Oakville is gathering community feedback on the development of a by-law aimed at regulating certain forms of protests near vulnerable social infrastructure, such as places of worship, hospitals, schools, daycares and libraries. From February 12 to March 5, Oakville residents can provide input through a telephone or online questionnaire. The feedback gathered will help guide Town of Oakville staff in preparing a draft by-law for the consideration of Oakville's Town Council. Learn more and provide input: https://bit.ly/4gHJE9G

We are so proud of our team and coaches and can’t wait to cheer for the 9 swimmers competing at OFSAA in March!

Annamay Oldershaw - Canadian Olympic Team 2008

The girls hockey team is undefeated and will play their final season game on Wednesday Feb.18 and they will be off to their play off run as well. Go Tigers!

Congratulations to our Boys Hockey Team who won their game in Milton and are now in the playoffs! We wish them tonnes of success as they start their playoff run.

Our Robotics Team competed at a Tech Challenge on Saturday February 7th in Toronto. The team earned a spirit award in their first competition and did a great job. If you have some knowledge about robotics such as electrical, manufacturing or programming and have some spare time, the team would appreciate your support by donating some time to assist them. They are planning up to 6 challenges for the 2026-2027 year. The team is also looking for sponsorship and if you could support them financially, it would be greatly appreciated as well. For any financial donations received, please give me a call so we can discuss how we can acknowledge your contribution. I would like to take a moment to thank the coaches and parents who gave up a lot of time to assist the Robotics team in getting ready for the competition.

I hope you have a great long weekend, enjoy the Family Day!

Dear TAB Community,

Semester 2 has started on a very positive note. Students have started to settle into their classes, getting to know what expectations are for their courses and looking ahead to the semester to come with enthusiasm.

Our sports teams are busy playing regular season games. Congratulations to the girls hockey team who are still undefeated and our members of our swim team who have qualified for GHAC and OFSAA! Go Tigers!

As of the first day of the semester, we have expanded our cell phone policy and expectations, please read through and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Every classroom now has a poster titled: T.A.B’s Phone Commitment: No Phone Bell to Bell. TAB's Phone Commitment.pdf

Path of Intervention

  1. Phone away when entering the class
  2. Verbal warning if out during class time
  3. Teacher contacts home
  4. Refer to Admin

If a phone is confiscated by a teacher and brought to the office the following steps will be taken:

a) First Infraction: Phone will be returned to the student at the end of the period
b) Second Infraction: Phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day
c) Third Infraction: Phone will not be returned to the student. A parent/guardian will have to come to the school and retrieve the phone. If that is not possible parents will have to email Administrators to discuss the situation and the student will be permitted to pick up the phone the following day.

In light of the cell phone policy, should you need to contact your student during class time, please call the main office and we will communicate the message to your student to call home.

Thank you for your assistance in keeping our classrooms as places of learning for all students.

Principal

Dear TAB Community,
Semester One exams have all been marked and Thursday students had an opportunity to review their marks for exams and final performance tasks. Report cards with final marks will be emailed home on February 9th. If you receive regular communications from the school and for some reason the report card doesn’t arrive, please check your junk mail as School Messenger uses the same emails for all family communications and reports we send home. If for some reason you still do not receive a report card please let us know so that we can resolve the issue and ensure that all contact emails on file are correct in our system.

All activities and sports will resume with classes on February 2nd, the first day of Semester 2. Please be reminded that classes start at 8:15am. The reason I am writing this is that I have been asked recently about the number of lates on attendance records. Any time a student arrives in class after the 8:15am bell, teachers are expected to mark them late. Thank you for doing your best to get your students here on time.

Timetables have been sent to all students. Students wishing to make changes to their timetable can use the Google Form that was sent with their timetable (and posted in the Student Services office) and/or connect with their Guidance Counsellor. Timetable changes must be completed by Friday February 6th. Students are expected to attend the classes on the present timetable until a change is officially made since there are waitlists for some classes and a change may or may not be possible due to classes being at a maximum class size.

Enjoy your weekend!

Dear TAB Families,

We are drawing close to the end of Semester One. The last day of regular classes is January 22 with Final Evaluations starting at 8:30am on January 22nd. Students will be requested to go home at the end of writing an exam. If that is not possible, they will be directed to the cafeteria until the buses arrive at the regular time. The rationale for this request is to keep hallways as quiet as possible so as not to disturb other students who will be still writing or completing other types of evaluations.

Some families have also received letters from Halton Region Public Health concerning the immunization status of their student. Please follow the directions in the letter. I would be very pleased if on February 12 I do not have to call you and inform you that as of February 13th your child is suspended as per Health Department regulations.

January 22nd is also the last day that students may submit any outstanding assignments to their teachers. If for some reason that is not possible, please have them communicate with the teacher and establish an alternate date or arrangement. If for some reason a student is unable to write an exam please notify the school. Alternate arrangements can be made so they have the opportunity to write the exam. Should your student miss an exam and the school is not notified, the exam will be recorded with a 0 grade. Considering most are worth 15% of the final mark, it will negatively impact the final mark of their course.

If a student requires assistance in preparing for an exam, they are encouraged to speak to their teacher. Staff will set aside a day and time to meet with the students to provide extra assistance beyond the classroom.

If we can be of assistance or you have concerns, please contact Ms.Sagar, Mr.McConvey or myself so we can resolve the issue.

IMPORTANT:  If you have used your HDSB email when applying for post secondary, resume development, job applications, etc. you will need to update your information and change it to a personal email address before access to your HDSB account is lost.
To retain your Google Workspace data please see one of the options below:

  • Transfer email and Drive files to a personal Google Account using Transfer Your Content - see Transfer their content
  • Personal Gmail accounts only have 15 GB free drive space
  • All files in your My Drive will count toward your quota
  • Archive data using Google Takeout
  • The traditional Takeout is also available to create an archive of all their data in Google Workspace.

This will enable you to easily retain your email, essays, resumes, science projects, and any other files stored on Google Drive before access has been removed to your HDSB account. This must be completed by February 15, 2025.

Please reach out to your student’s Guidance Counsellor if you have any questions:

Dear TAB Community,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable winter break and wish you a Happy New Year.

There are a number of fundraising events happening this month so please make a note of what interests you and how you can help.

  • The Student Council is still raising money to purchase the new mascot costume. Students are still able to purchase stickers for $1.00 each in the cafeteria on Mondays at lunch. Also in a few days you will receive information about a greeting card sale to support the Tabby the Tiger effort.
  • The TAB Swim Team has planned a Scrap Metal Recycling Drive for Saturday January 17th to raise money so they can purchase parkas to stay warm on the pool deck during competitions and meets. It will take place at the back of the school where there will be a large bin to place materials for scrap. Items that will be accepted are:
    • Copper wiring
    • Broken bicycles
    • Steel appliances
    • Old metal tools and hardware
    • Automobile parts
    • Car batteries

Thank you for supporting the TAB Sharks Swim Team as we raise money to purchase parkas.

I-STEM/AP Programs

If you know local families with high school aged children that do not attend TAB, please let them know some of the exciting things that are happening with our programs here at Blakelock!

  • We are accepting registrations for the grade 10 I-STEM program and grade 9 & 10 Advanced Placement.
  • For 2026/2027 we will also be offering the following Advanced Placement courses for grade 11; Biology 3UP, Chemistry 3UP, Computer Science 3UP, World History 3UP, Physics 3UP, Mathematics 3UP and both Core French and French 3UP.
  • This coming year for grade 12, we will also offer English 3UP. In 2027/2028 we will expand our grade 12 offerings to match our grade 11 offerings from 2026/2027.
  • We will continue to offer the opportunity for students to challenge various courses by writing the AP College Board Exams.

In the upcoming 2026/2027 year we will also have to be more firm about the College Board deadlines as to ordering exam timelines, fee collection and cost of cancellation. In the fall we will provide all students with the complete information regarding Advanced Placement Exams. Stay tuned for more information!

A major issue has been raised by staff regarding the use of cell phones during instructional time. Our school leadership team will be reviewing our current cell phone policy, making revisions as required for the start of semester 2. The new revised policy will be communicated to all families prior to February 2nd.

Have a great weekend,

Dear TAB Community,

Well here it is, the last school day of 2025.  I hope all students have a great break.  My one suggestion is that they find things to do they enjoy and forget about school work for 10 days.  They deserve and have earned a break from the daily routine of classes and homework.

Congratulations to our Boys Hockey Team that won their tournament in London, and congratulations to our Girls Hockey Team on winning their tournament in Burlington, continuing their impressive winning record this season to 11-0.

Please take a moment to read the HDSB’s featured article about the innovations from some of our I-STEM students, available through this link.

Soon Final Evaluations will begin in January.  The schedule including important information is attached here.  Jan26FinalEvaluations.pdf

Today is a short day ending 90 minutes early at 1:10 p.m., with buses departing 90 minutes early as well.  If you are travelling during the break, safe travels.  We will see you on Monday, January 5, the first day of school in 2026.

Dear TAB Community,

As we approach the last week before the winter break, school events should be slowing down. However it appears that it is not going to happen as our students are still busy rehearsing and planning activities.

Yesterday and today a number of our elementary schools were here to attend drama class presentations of a winter holiday. Our Jazz band and Choir are on tour to other elementary schools doing musical presentations.

Volleyball, hockey, basketball and swim team are all still busy with practices, tournaments and league games. I’m pretty sure that by December 19th, they will all be looking forward to a break.

This past week we had students organizing both a coat drive to assist families in need and a shoebox drive for a local womens shelter. Another student organized a blood donation drive which was open to all adults in our community. The clinic has been organized for December 18th in Burlington.

Just a reminder that if you are interested in the grade 10 Advanced Placement or I-Stem programs, application for both programs is this evening at 11:59pm.

Have a great weekend,

John Stieva
Principal

All Day $1.00 Cafe
Student Council is planning to host an all-day Café on the last day before Winter Break (Friday, December 19) in order to raise funds to replace Tabby the Tiger. We will be selling some festive goodies such as hot chocolate, cookies and popcorn. Everything will be $1 and 100% of the proceeds will go towards replacing our beloved Tabby the Tiger. Please remind your student to bring cash and encourage them to stop by for a last day treat!

Scrap Metal Drive

Have you ever wondered why swimmers wear parkas on the pool deck? It’s because, unlike penguins, we weren’t blessed with built-in insulation. Without our trusty parkas, we’d be out there shivering like confused zoo exhibits. Now that you know our chilly little secret, the TAB Swim Team is on a mission to get our very own glorious parkas! And you can help; while cleaning out your house this winter break. We’re hosting a Scrap Metal Drive on January 17th.
Got metal junk? Fantastic! Bring us your old appliances, copper, random garage gremlins made of steel, even old cars (or their batteries). If it’s metal, we’ll take it; and turn it into warm swimmers.

Early Dismissal - Dec. 19th
Just a reminder to families that on Friday, December 19th there will be an early dismissal for the Winter Vacation. Students will be dismissed at 1:10pm and school bus transportation will also be adjusted to the early dismissal. Busses will arrive to pick students up 90 minutes earlier than their regularly scheduled time.

2026 Grad Hoodies - Spirit Wear
TAB Spiritwear & 2026 Grad Hoodies are still available on School Cash Online. There is still time to buy your 2026 Graduate a hoodie to celebrate their Senior year here at TAB.

That we are a community is demonstrated by our students every week. They are busy planning various drives to collect items for those in need. I am ever impressed by the students' caring and determination to make a difference.

As there are only 10 school days left until the Winter Break, I have been requested to remind you that on Friday, December 19th there will be an early dismissal for the Winter Vacation. Students will be dismissed at 1:10pm and school bus transportation will also be adjusted. Busses will arrive to pick students up 90 minutes earlier than their regularly scheduled time.

The Student Council is busy planning the Winter Assembly on the last day. This is always a great event and a positive way to end the year and start a 2 week break. All classes will resume on January 5th.

Thank you to everyone for supporting our fundraising efforts to purchase a new T.A.B Mascot costume. Our present mascot has served us well but the repairs needed will cost more than it will cost to replace him.

On Thursday December 11th, we will be emailing 15th week report letters of concern home to students whose achievement in a course is 60% or lower. Students who are missing important instructional time will also be receiving a letter. If you receive a letter and have any questions, please contact your student’s teacher or one of the administrators to discuss the issue or concern.

School Council Meetings start at 7:00pm and Parents and Guardians are invited to attend to discuss various school issues. You may also have suggestions or ideas that may improve the delivery of education at our school. The education of students is a partnership between us and you, if we all contribute to the educational picture, students will be well served. The upcoming School Council meeting dates planned for the new year are January 19th, March 2nd and May 4th, hope to see you there!

The E.Q.A.O results were released by the Ontario Ministry of Education this past week. I am proud to report that 91% of the students who wrote the test were successful in earning that requirement towards the achievement of their O.S.S.D. Students who were unsuccessful will be provided with extra literacy support so that they can acquire the skills needed to be successful in their next attempt.

Have a great weekend,
Principal John Stieva

Help HDSB Students With Warm Coats and Boots This Winter

As colder weather approaches, the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) and its famous cheerful helper, Carrie the Backpack, are sounding the alarm: more students than ever are arriving at school without the essentials they need to stay warm, healthy, and ready to learn. Students like Esme, whose daily walk to school became unbearable as temperatures dropped.

"Esme's winter coat was too small and thin in places. She had to wear shoes in the slush, and her feet were wet and cold on her walk to school. Her socks were damp all day, and all she could think of was her walk home after school.”

You can give Esme and other students hope—and warmth—when you donate at nostudentleftbehind.ca. HLF is looking to ensure 25 students a day have appropriate clothing and food to get through the start of winter and holiday break in December. To make sure HLF can continue to say “YES” to every request for emergency support they receive, they are accepting donations at nostudentleftbehind.ca. Thank you for supporting students in our community.

Save Tabby the Tiger Fundraiser

We are excited to share that our school is holding a fun fundraising initiative to support a very special member of our community, Tabby the Tiger, our beloved school mascot!

Recently, Tabby has found himself with a few unexpected “medical bills” after a minor mishap (don’t worry, he’s on the mend!). To help him get back to full Tiger strength, we’ve created a light-hearted campaign to support Tabby’s road to recovery, including a couple fundraising opportunities this season:

Terra Cotta Cookies
A delicious way to support the cause—perfect for gifts or family treats. The deadline to order is December 3rd. The order will be delivered to Blakelock December 17th.

Online Donations via School Cash Online
For families who prefer to contribute directly, a donation option will be available through School Cash Online. https://hdsb.schoolcashonline.com/Fee/Details/583/181/false/true?school=771&initiative=104

Thank you to everyone who supported us by purchasing Purdy’s Chocolates already, we will distribute the chocolate to students and parents on December 18 at the school.

All funds raised will go toward purchasing a new school mascot costume ensuring that Tabby can continue bringing school spirit, energy, and Tiger pride to our community for years to come. We truly appreciate your support and sense of fun. Thank you for helping keep the Tiger spirit strong!

Dear T.A.B Families,

Last week you should have received your student’s Midterm Report via email. If you did not receive it please call the school on Monday and we will print one for you and your student can pick it up from the Main Office.

In reviewing Midterms, I was impressed by students' progress in many of their classes. Marks demonstrated that they completed the required work and it was completed with excellence. There is also a correlation between some marks and the record of absences and lates for some students.  Students who demonstrated excellent attendance tended to also have marks in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Students who missed classes tended to have lower marks and the more absences, the lower the midterm mark. So please encourage your students to attend class on a regular basis and inevitably they will see more improvement and success in their courses. We are aware that some absences are unavoidable due to appointments or personal circumstances. Encourage your students to speak with their teacher to determine any missed work and establish a timeline to catch up.

Upcoming this week are several events. On November 24th we are holding the Fall Pep Rally to recognize the fall sports teams and introduce the winter sports teams. This is an opportunity to thank players and coaches for giving of their time and participating in a sport. Go Tigers!

The Full Disclosure date for marks entered on the Ontario Student Transcript is Monday November 24th. After this date, all courses that a student is registered in will have the midterm mark entered on their transcript permanently. No Student Left Behind – Supporting HDSB Students in Need This Winter

November and December are the busiest times at HLF. Last year, an average of 25 students each day needed clothing and food in those 2 months in Halton.

Your support can make a meaningful difference in students’ lives like Esme. Even a small donation helps ensure no student is left behind this winter. To learn more or to contribute, visit nostudentleftbehind.ca. Thank you for supporting students in our community.

Angel Fund Donations
The TAB Angel Fund exists to assist students who would not otherwise have the financial means to participate in many activities and events around the school.music functions. If you wish to donate to the TAB Angel Fund you can do so through the School Cash Online Link and designate it for the "Angel Fund" and the money will be allocated accordingly. The Halton District School Board is a registered Canadian Charitable organization and a receipt will be issued for income tax purposes.

Dear T.A.B Families,

This coming week on November 13th we will be hosting a parent information session concerning Advanced Placement. Thank you to those of you who have registered and if you have not registered yet, the site is still open to complete registrations. Thank you for your questions and we will provide answers as part of the presentation.

On November 20th we will be hosting a Grade 8 Parent Information Evening. During the presentations you will have an opportunity to visit various classrooms and meet some of our curriculum leaders to gain information about grade 9 curriculum and learning expectations. The evening has been expanded to include parents of grade 6 & 7 students as well.

November 11th is Remembrance Day, to commemorate this day we will be holding a number of assemblies and having a moment of silence during the assemblies rather than at the traditional time of 11:00 o’clock. We are making this adjustment as our students have lunch time at 11:00am and many leave the building. But I feel it is important to have the time to reflect and honour those who have served and many who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

On November 12th at 3:00pm we will hold a brief ceremony at which our own Head of Science Mr.Vittorio Iafrate will be awarded the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Joining us to present the award will be Oakville East M.P Sima Acan, Director of Education Curtis Ennis, Trustee Carole Baxter and Superintendant Eleanor McIntosh. We are extremely proud of Mr.Iafrate for this outstanding accomplishment.

Due to recent issues, please remind students that skateboards (not longboards) must be secured in a bag or backpack and kept on the student’s lap or on the floor by their feet while travelling on  the school bus. This requirement is an important safety measure. Unsecured items can become dangerous projectiles during sudden stops or accidents. Keeping skateboards in a bag ensures they are properly contained, which prevents them from blocking aisles or emergency exits, and keeps them out of the driver’s line of sight. It also helps prevent injuries from wheels or sharp edges and stops the boards from rolling and causing slips or trips.

Dear T.A.B Families,

I have some exciting news, in September of 2026 we will be expanding our offerings. Grade 9 students attending our school in September will now be able to enroll in Advanced Placement Preparatory classes in the following courses: English, Science, Georgraphy and Mathematics. Each year we will continue to expand the program to include the next year. Applications are open and close on December 3rd at 11:59pm.

Another first is that this year students will be able to write Advanced Placement Exams here at school. Though to prepare to challenge a course will require self study as we do not offer the actual course this year. For 2026-2027 depending on student interest, we will be offering the following Advanced Placement courses: Gr.11 - French Immersion, English (NBE3U1), History; Gr.12 - Biology, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics (Calculus).
On November 13th at 7:00pm we will be holding an information evening to provide you wih the required information so that you will be able to decide if this is the right pathway for your student.  Please see the attached AP community event and registration.docx.pdf  to register for the event.

In 2026/2027, we will also be offering Gifted Education. If your child has been identified as gifted through an Identification & Placement Review Committee, they may select some courses that have been identified as gifted on the option sheet. If you wish more information please contact our Guidance Department Staff.

On November 5th most of our Grade 9’s will be involved in going with a parent to their place of employment for this year's Take Our Kids To Work Day. This gave us a great opportunity to invite our feeder school grade 7’s in for the day for a brief “What is High School Like?” experience. They will meet teachers, and have experiential learning opportunities. We look forward to welcoming some grade 7's and showing them around TAB!

Today our Boys Varsity Football team plays their first playoff game in 7 years on our field against CKSS! We wish them success and regardless of the outcome, the players have been excellent role models in representing their school. Go Tigers!!

Fall Update fom Athletics
Jr. Boys Volleyball play in their semi final game on Monday. Sr. Girls Basketball had a big upset win against Nelson on Thursday to qualify them for the semi finals on Monday as well.

The Varsity girls field hockey team won the HSSAA Tier 1 Championships last week, they narrowly missed going to OFSAA this week in a tough 1-0 loss to Bishop Redding at GHAC.

Cross Country OFSAA is tomorrow in Brampton. Good luck to Ethan Deveaux and Ethan Crowe as they represent Blakelock at the provincial level. A big shout out to our very own Mr. Rochus who is running the media at OFSAA cross country tomorrow also! The fall season is coming to a close and we congratulate all athletes who represented Blakelock so well.

The winter season is approaching and we encourage all students to try a sport. Practices and tryouts for the girls and boys hockey have already started. But it's not too late to join the swim team also! We are excited that we have former Canadian OlympianAnnamay Oldershaw coaching the team this year! Girls volleyball and boys basketball tryouts start next week. The ski/snowboard team will be starting their dryland training soon also. Athletes are encouraged to listen to announcements for team meetings and tryout dates and times. They are welcome to stop by the phys.ed. office if they would like more information about any of the teams.

In a game for the ages, our Toronto Blue Jays stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park – and now they’re heading to the World Series!

To celebrate this epic moment, Monday, October 27 is officially Blue Jays Day at the HDSB! Let’s fill our school with Blue Jays pride by wearing Jays colours or team gear. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just caught the fever during this playoff run, everyone’s invited to join the fun.

This celebration is a great opportunity to show our commitment to Kindness, Connection and Community by coming together to cheer, support one another and share in something that unites Canadians from coast to coast. It’s about celebrating together, building connections and showing the positive energy that makes our school communities strong.

Let’s channel our inner Jays – bring that Vladdy-level energy, some Springer spark and a touch of October magic to kick off the week in style. So dust off your caps, grab your jerseys (or anything blue and white!) and get ready to celebrate a truly Canadian baseball moment.

Let’s Go, Blue Jays!

We had a grade 11 trip to the Toronto Zoo, a grade 10 Career Coach Event, an ESL/Newcomer Parent Information Session and an amazing turnout for our Parent/Guardian and Teacher Interview evening last night.

In sports many of our teams represented Blakelock with passion, enthusiasm and grace; Jr.Girls Volleyball, Jr.Boys Volleyball, Sr.Girls Basketball, Sr.Boys Volleyball, Jr.Girls Basketball, Varsity Boys Football, and both Golf and Tennis Teams were out on the fields and courts giving it their all to represent T.A.Blakelock in the world of sport.

Hopefully you will all have a restful week and come back ready to embrace all the exciting things on the calendar for next week!

What a fantastic Spirit Week we had!!  Students and staff participated in the daily themes which were a hit. We won the homecoming “pink” football game 35 - 20, and we raised $300 for Breast Cancer Awareness by running a concession stand!! The game started at 11:30am during lunch break and some classes came out to the field during period 4 to see the last half of the game. We are so proud of our Varsity Boys Football Team!

We capped off the week with an outstanding Fall Semi-Formal Dance!!  Students were so well behaved and appreciative of the Student Council for organizing this event for them. The police officers that were present, said that it was so great to see such a wholesome event with happy, polite teenagers. Way to go Tigers!!!

  • 375 students partying in the right spirit.
  • Looking good and busting a move on the dance floor (There may be a video of me out there…just saying).
  • Taking crazy pictures in the photo booth
  • Having fun with friends before the long weekend
  • Zero student issues…..PRICELESS!!!!

Thank you to the staff supervisors, we cannot run these types of events without you!!  And thank you to all parents for supporting us in our effort to run a successful event!!

Alas, my time here at Blakelock has come to an end. Today is my last day, and you will all be pleased to know that Mr. John Stieva will be back at the helm on Tuesday. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with students, staff and parents in such a wonderful school community.  I wish you all the best for the remainder of the school year. I cannot believe how fast September went. The great weather has certainly contributed to student enjoyment of sports, school events, and field trips this week. Students enjoyed a fantastic music trip, “Band Camp”, at The Circle Square Ranch, as well as the Outdoor Education class's camping and rafting overnight trip to 5 Oaks Campground. Both field trips were a great success and the students really seemed to enjoy themselves!

5th Week Progress Reports will be emailed to parents next week. We are here to help, so if you have concerns…please contact the classroom teacher for more information or strategies. They can always seek out more support for your child as needed.

Parent/guardian and Teacher Interviews will be held on Thursday, Oct.16th this year (Save the date!). There will be an informal “meet the teacher” hour for quick updates from teachers and then an hour for more formal 10 minute interviews. The formal interview time is intended for parents/guardians to discuss concerns with their child’s teacher beyond just, “How are they doing in class?” type conversations.  More information on this night will be provided later.

Next week is Spirit Week!!! Check out the student council post @tabtigers on instagram for details about what to wear each day! Next Friday is a P.D. day - no classes. The following Monday is Thanksgiving, so there will be a nice four day weekend for students.

Enjoy the weekend.

The school has been operating in full swing this week with league games in sports, clubs up and running, as well as the student lead Terry Fox Event yesterday... and the weather even cooperated!! Students were very respectful of their support for raising awareness and funds for cancer research. This event involved a student lead assembly, a walk/run in the community, as well as a BBQ and games on the back field over lunch. Period 2 teachers are still collecting "Toonies for Terry" next week and if anyone is interested in donating directly to the website, here's the link https://schools.terryfox.ca/105326. Our donation total will be revealed later once it has been completely counted!!  A huge thank you to the grade 12 Leadership class for all their hard work organing the whole event

Good afternoon to the T.A. Blakelock Tiger community,

The T.A. Blakelock Club Fair took place this past Thursday and it was a great opportunity for students to learn more about the plethora of ways that students can get involved at the school. We have a lot of brand new clubs starting this year so students have many new activities to try and lots of different ways to meet new people no matter where their interests lie.  Students are encouraged to connect with their teachers should they have any questions about clubs at TAB.

An email was sent today at 4:30pm requesting that parents/guardians complete a google form to update/verify the Student Information Verification Form. The 2024/2025 yearbooks have arrived! If you purchased a yearbook last year, we will be handing them out at lunch starting Monday in the South 205 classroom. All graduates from last year who purchased a yearbook can pick them up at the main office.

Next week we have a major event planned for Thursday September 25th which is the Terry Fox Run and Walk. Students will have the opportunity to run or walk within the community. This year we will not be asking you to complete a permission form again. Instead, we will assume that all students are allowed to participate unless you indicate otherwise by emailing me at pecej@hdsb.ca to inform us that your child is not allowed to leave school grounds. Please remind your child that they are representing the school in the community and we want to leave a positive impression with our neighbours.

**This is an important reminder to please complete the Start Up Forms 2025/2026 that were emailed to you on September 3rd and the Secondary Intramural Information Forms that were sent home in your student’s period 1 class. These are important forms that the school requires to have up-to-date emergency information for your student, and to give permission to participate in all the other school activities throughout the year.

We will be hosting a BBQ and some games during lunch after the walk/run is complete. Any proceeds will be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation.  If you would like to donate to help our fundraiser, please use this link:  https://schools.terryfox.ca/105326

IMPORTANT UPDATE:  October 1 and 2 HDSB~Sheridan Post-Secondary Exploration Event
As you may know, Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), the union representing full-time support staff at all Ontario colleges, began strike action on September 11.  We are writing to inform you that the annual Post-Secondary Pathways Exploration Event, scheduled to take place October 1-2 at Sheridan College has had to be cancelled due to the province-wide strike impacting all Ontario colleges.
We know this annual event is important for Grade 11 and 12 students and their families as they plan their post-secondary journey. We are exploring options to reschedule the event for a later time and will share further information as it becomes available.
In the meantime, students and families are encouraged to attend upcoming virtual events on pathways exploration hosted by the Halton District School Board beginning in late September. Information about these opportunities to connect and learn virtually will be shared with families by the HDSB over the coming weeks. As always, your school’s Guidance department is available to answer any questions and to support students in planning their next steps after high school.

Thank you for your understanding.

Good afternoon to the T.A. Blakelock Tiger community,

My name is Mrs.Jacquie Pece and I am a retired Halton principal that is currently helping out at Blakelock for the principal Mr.John Stieva. He is currently off work for the next little while. I am happy to be here and to assist students, staff and parents with the start up of a new school year. I was a teacher here back in the day so it feels like coming home! It has been great to walk the halls of Blakelock, meet students and staff and see all the new projects that have been completed, as well as the ones that are still under construction. The school looks amazing!  Everyone has been so nice and welcoming. What a great school vibe we have going on here!!

We have finished the second week of classes and all timetable changes have been completed, classes are balanced and students have settled in nicely. Fall sports and clubs are underway and we even had our first exhibition football game today on the field. Go Tigers!!!!  September 18th we will have a sports, clubs and activities fair to help motivate students to take that first step and join something that they are interested in and passionate about. We encourage all students to make the most of their high school career by getting involved!!

Have a great weekend all and enjoy this lovely weather!!
Principal Jacquie Pece

With a new school year in full swing, Oakville Transit would like to update and remind students
of the services they could benefit from:

  • Ride free with PRESTO: Youth ages 13 to 19 are eligible for free transit service by travelling with a PRESTO card. PRESTO cards are available at all Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Oakville, or students may choose to download a virtual PRESTO card from the Android and iOS app stores. Youth who do not have a valid PRESTO card will be asked to pay the fare.
  • School Special Routes: Oakville Transit has adjusted service to accommodate the increase in youth ridership. This includes additional school specials at the end of the school day as well as some additional specials during the lunch hour. September school special schedules are available on the Oakville Transit website
  • Safety Reminders: Riders are reminded to treat Oakville Transit staff and fellow customers with respect and courtesy. To ensure the safety of all, Oakville Transit will be removing any riders who act in an inappropriate, disrespectful or unsafe manner.

Just a reminder to any students who will be absent for more than 3 days please stop at the office in advance to pick up an Extended Absence Form to be filled out by the student, signed by parents and returned to the office for Vice-Principal approval BEFORE leaving for vacation or extended absence.

Last week families received the first of two yearly start up google forms. These forms are to authorize photo use, and participation in outdoor activities and walking excursions. Please read through them carefully and submit electronically no later than September 25th. In class, students have received a permission form to be returned to their homeroom teacher as soon as possible. This is an intramural form to participate in school activities. **The second start up google form is the verification form to verify and correct personal information including addresses, phone numbers and emails. This form will be communicated later in September so please watch your emails for this form!

If you have any concerns or issues and wish to contact a teacher please call the school and we can give you their email 905-827-1158. You may also contact one of the Administrators: Kevin McConvey, mcconveyk@hdsb.ca, responsible for students whose last name begins with A-L or Kathleen St.Onge, stongek@hdsb.ca, responsible for students last name M-Z and Principal Jacquie Pece, pecej@hdsb.ca, responsible for Gr.12 students.

Here it is Tuesday September 2nd and we are looking forward to the first day of school for students tomorrow Wednesday September 3rd. Our grade 9 students will start their day at 8:15am and be involved in orientation activities led by our Link Crew students. Link Crew members have been making efforts to touch base with grade 9's in their groups. If you haven't heard from your Link Crew leader don't worry, we have a place for your student here and a volunteer in a Tiger Crew shirt will show them where to go once they arrive at school.

All other students grades 10-12 will start school at 12:05pm and all students will attend all 4 classes in the afternoon for shortened periods. Please see the schedule shown below. Any grade 10-12 students arriving by bus in the morning will be expected to be in the library or cafeteria until the start of their period 1 class in the afternoon.

Students in our Community Pathways Program (CPP), will follow the regular day schedule starting at 8:15am and will be dismissed at their regular time in the afternoon.

Student timetables were sent out by email this past Friday. If you did not receive one, please contact the Main Office as one can be provided for you there.

See you all tomorrow!
