Hawk Highlights

Happy (Almost) Summer, CHN!

As we share our final 2025/26 Hawk Highlights and wrap up another fantastic school year, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the entire CHN community. This year, our school-wide focus was on kindness, connection, and community, and our Nighthawks truly lived these values every day in our classrooms, hallways, and extra-curriculars.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to our School Council for their incredible dedication. From student favorites like weekly Popcorn and Hot Food Days, to Fall Fair, the Dance-a-Thon, and STEM Night, your hard work brings our community together. Council’s fundraising also generously supported the Grade 8 Celebration, the Angel Fund, outdoor resources, math materials, Kindergarten tools and equipment, replenishing phys ed equipment, and lighting for our Dance-A-Thon, CHN’s Got Talent and various other school events . A special thank you to our School Council leaders: Chair Krista Kukkonen, Treasurer Suchi Beri and Secretary Joe Giammarco. We also want to  thank the rest of our council members for their time and effort this year.  We look forward to continuing our work together next year!

A school relies on many moving parts, and we are so grateful for the team effort it takes to support our students. A huge thank you to our educators for their care in the classrooms, for genuinely listening to student voices, and for volunteering their time to run the sports, clubs, and intramurals that our kids love. We also want to thank our Student Supervisors, whose daily care ensures our students stay safe and supported during their breaks. We are so incredibly lucky to have such a strong and supportive team at CHN!

We also recognize our custodial team for their ongoing maintenance of the building over the school year, and for the heavy lifting required as they reset the school over the summer break. Finally, a special thank you to Ms. Persson and Ms. O’Reilly in the main office.  Their daily warmth, patience, and organization keep our school running smoothly and make everyone feel welcome the moment they walk through the door.

We wish all of our Nighthawk families a safe, restful, and healthy summer. We can't wait to see your smiling faces in September!

Congratulations, grade 8 graduates!

What a night! Yesterday evening, we sent off our Class of 2026 in style. Graduates walked the red carpet lined with their own custom "Walk of Fame" stars, followed by strikes and snacks at Splitsville.

Thank you to our amazing staff and School Council for making this special night happen. We are incredibly proud of our graduates as they take flight to high school. Don't forget to come back and visit.  Once a Nighthawk, always a Nighthawk!

A Message from the Lieutenant Governor to the Graduating Class of 2026

Congratulations to the Class of 2026!

We're happy to share a special message from the Honourable Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, who has sent heartfelt congratulations and inspiring words for all our amazing graduates. Join us in celebrating the achievements and bright futures of these outstanding students! View a written message and a video message from the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

Junior Track & Field Meet

Our Junior Track and Field meet on Monday was a runaway success! We are so incredibly proud of all our student athletes who pushed their limits, cheered each other on, and showed the true meaning of Nighthawk pride.

We want to send a giant thank you to our dedicated teachers for coaching and supervising, as well as our fantastic student leaders whose hard work kept the entire day running smoothly.

Thank you to everyone who made it a memorable day. Go Nighthawks go!

Jump Rope for Heart - Wednesday, June 24th

The countdown is on! This Wednesday, June 24th, our students will be skipping, jumping, and trying their absolute best not to trip over their own feet for a fantastic cause.

We are so close to our goal! Thanks to your incredible generosity, we’ve officially raised $1,560. We just need one final push to hit our $2,000 goal. If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, you can still support life-saving research by visiting our page at https://jumpropeforheart.crowdchange.ca/116762

A massive THANK YOU to our amazing student and staff Jump Rope for Heart leaders. They’ve been working tirelessly to plan, organize, and run this event. We literally couldn't do it without you!

Join our team as a Student Supervisor!

We are looking for both permanent and supply Student Supervisors to help support our students during our daily Nutrition Breaks. This role includes monitoring students while they eat inside their classrooms, as well as supervising them during outdoor recess. If you enjoy working with children and want to be a helpful, supportive presence during their breaks, this is a great way to get involved in the CHN community!

Supervisors help keep our breaks running smoothly, assist when everyday issues arise, and work closely with our teachers and administration to keep our school safe and positive.

Whether you are looking for a steady daily role or the flexibility of supply work, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Ms. Savo (savos@hdsb.ca) for an application form or for more details. Thank you for your consideration!

School Volunteers - Police Record Check Requirements

Before participating in school activities, all volunteers are required to meet the HDSB’s volunteer screening requirements. To keep our schools safe, volunteers must complete a Police Record Check (PRC) that includes a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).

Under updated provincial regulations effective April 1, 2026, school boards are required to collect a new PRC every 5 years. As such, volunteers whose most recent PRC was submitted on or before September 1, 2021, must obtain and submit a new PRC with VSC. Please contact the office to receive a letter on school letterhead to support your request.  Volunteers who do not require a new PRC this year must complete an Annual Offence Declaration.

Please note:

  • VSCs must be obtained through the police service where the volunteer resides.

  • Third-party online background check services do not meet HDSB requirements, as they do not include Vulnerable Sector Screening.

  • If you are interested in volunteering, contact school office staff to obtain the required documentation (letter) and more information regarding the volunteer screening process.

Thank you for your continued support of our students and school.

Tech-Assisted, Human-Approved: This newsletter was curated by C.H. Norton staff with creative and editorial support from AI.

It has been another wonderfully busy and action-packed week at CHN! Our students have been thriving across a variety of activities, from Mrs. McAra and Ms. Savo hosting our "May the Books Be With You" reading champions for some well-deserved extra time outdoors, to our Girls and Boys Soccer teams wrapping up their fantastic seasons this past Wednesday with incredible teamwork. While the rainy weather unfortunately forced us to postpone Day 2 of our Karaoke Dance Party, everyone can stay tuned for a surprise pop-up dance party coming very soon! Beyond our regular school days, we were also thrilled to connect with the wider community this week. We honoured our amazing CHN volunteers at our annual Volunteer Tea, extending our most heartfelt appreciation to everyone who supports us, and wrapped up the week today with our inspiring students and staff who attended the Special Athletes Track Meet.

A note from the Eco Club…

This coming Monday, June 15th will be the last day to drop off any used batteries for this year's school collection drive. Please send in any remaining batteries so we can get them counted and recycled. Thank you for supporting this important eco-initiative!

Also starting Monday, Class 5-1 and our Eco Team will be offering free bags of compost to help boost your garden! Throughout the school year, students have been caring for our FoodCycler, which transforms food scraps into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. The compost has been blended with soil to create a ready-to-use garden mix for our school community.

Compost bags will be available for pickup from the front drop-off table starting Monday morning and will be replenished daily while supplies last. Thank you to Class 5-1 and our Eco Team for their hard work in helping reduce waste and support sustainability at our school.

Junior Track & Field Meet: Monday, June 15th

Don't forget to pack water, snacks, sunscreen, and proper running shoes. Go Nighthawks!

Jump Rope for Heart - June 24th

There’s still time to register for Jump Rope for Heart!

Our event day is coming up on June 24. Visit our school's fundraising page at https://jumpropeforheart.crowdchange.ca/116762 to make a donation, or register and share your child’s fundraising page with family and friends to spread the word! Also, when you register online, and get your first donation, your child will be entered into the Desjardins Heart Hero contest and have a chance to win one of 200 scooters!

Thanks to your generous donations, we have already raised over $1500! Help us support life-saving research, and reach our school's fundraising goal of $2000.

National Indigenous History Month

Throughout the month of June, our school is proud to recognize National Indigenous History Month. We will be actively learning about, honouring, and celebrating the rich cultures, diverse histories, and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

This is an important opportunity to deepen our understanding of Indigenous histories and strengthen our shared commitment to reconciliation.

Celebrating Pride Month

Pride Month is observed in June as a time to honour the identities, resilience, and contributions of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender- and sexually-diverse (2S&LGBTQ+) communities. It is also a time to reaffirm the importance of dignity, safety, and equity for all, as outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The origins of Pride can be traced to the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which helped spark a global movement for 2S&LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. In Canada, this legacy continues through a long history of advocacy and community building. More recently, the federal government introduced Pride Season in 2023 to recognize the many events and celebrations taking place throughout the summer months.

As a school community, we recognize Pride Month as an opportunity to learn, reflect, and continue working toward spaces where everyone feels a strong sense of belonging.

Celebrating an Inspire award recipient

We are thrilled to recognize Doug Goodhand, our wonderful school crossing guard, who recently received an HDSB Inspire Award, which recognizes individuals who make outstanding contributions to student well-being and school communities.

Doug plays an essential role in keeping our students safe every day, greeting them with a smile, and ensuring everyone crosses the street safely.

This award is a well-deserved recognition of Doug’s dedication, positivity, and commitment to our school community. Thank you, Doug, for all that you do – we are so grateful to have you looking out for our students!

A message from Halton Learning Foundation…

As the school year winds down, the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) invites families to take part in the ‘Thank a Teacher’ campaign, a meaningful initiative to recognize the incredible contributions of teachers and school staff across HDSB.

Beyond lessons and assignments, students are learning to be kind, persevere, and believe in themselves. Much of that learning is made possible by educators who show up in quiet but powerful ways.

It may be the teacher who noticed a student struggling and offered encouragement.

The staff member who made a child feel included.

The educator who stayed a little longer to help something click.

Or a retiring teacher whose years of care have shaped countless lives.

These moments may not always be visible, but they are deeply felt.

Through the Thank a Teacher campaign, you are invited to honour an educator, a staff member, or a retiree with a donation in their name. Your gratitude becomes meaningful support for students in need across our community.

When a gift is made, you can send a personalized card and message to the honoured educator, letting them know someone recognized their compassion and paid it forward.

Honour an educator by visiting thankmyteacher.ca

We were so excited to welcome the week with warm, mostly sunny skies! The beautiful weather has been a wonderful backdrop for a very busy and productive week at school.

This week, both our Primary and Junior learners began their EQAO assessments. We could not be prouder of the perseverance and dedication all of these students have demonstrated as they tackle their writing. They are working so hard, and their efforts deserve a huge celebration!

Mathletes in action!

We are proud to share that several of our students recently participated in the internationally recognized University of Waterloo Gauss Math Competition. This event challenges students to apply problem-solving, logical reasoning, and mathematical thinking skills beyond the classroom.

Throughout the event, our students demonstrated immense perseverance, focus, and enthusiasm as they tackled a variety of challenging questions. We know that participating in contests like this helps students build confidence, strengthen critical thinking skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for mathematics.

We congratulate all students who took part in the competition! We also want to extend a special shout-out to Mme Scholte for organizing this opportunity and supporting our students every step of the way.

We are incredibly proud of the hard work, dedication, and time these students put into preparing for such an important visit!

*Friendly Reminder: Starting this week, our Hawk Highlights are moving directly to the school website! To stay updated, please visit our site every Friday after 5:00 pm for the latest weekly highlights.

You could feel the extra excitement in the air this week! Our halls were buzzing with energy as we prepared for Norton’s Got Talent, and the showcase itself was a spectacular success. It was a joy to bring our community together to celebrate the incredible and diverse gifts of our students.

Both performances were truly a “wow” experience, but an event like this doesn't happen without a massive team effort. We are so grateful for the "team behind the talent," as our staff went above and beyond, handling everything from auditions and rehearsals to stage decorations and programs.

Finally, a huge thank you to our families and friends in the audience. Your enthusiasm and encouragement created a wonderful spirit of support that filled the room. Our students shone brightly, and one thing is for certain: Norton sure does have talent!

Wellness Warriors lead the way for Mental Health week

As a school, we recognized Mental Health Week throughout the week. Each day, classes were provided with a Mental Health Tip and a Mental Health Challenge to help promote positive well-being and healthy habits. Students were encouraged to actively listen when talking with friends, move their bodies, build connections by participating in activities with others, and speak kindly to themselves and those around them. Thank you to our Wellness Warriors for helping support and promote these important initiatives throughout the week!

Courtesy seat applications for 2026-27

Each year, in accordance with HSTS Procedure HS-1-004 – Courtesy Seats, families with children who are not eligible for school bus transportation to and from school, may apply for a courtesy seat. The HSTS Courtesy Seat online application opens for submissions Wednesday, April 15th, 2026 until Tuesday, June 30th, 2026 at 5:00 p.m.

HSTS will complete the courtesy seat application review and allocation process over the summer, in order to allow courtesy riders to begin riding the bus on the first day of school in September 2025. Parents and guardians will be advised of the status of their application by the third week of August via email, to the primary contact provided to the school. Approved applicants can access their transportation schedule via the HSTS Parent Portal during the third week of August.

We are also asking that families complete the HSTS Opt Out form if their eligible children do not intend on using the school bus in 2026-27. This will allow HSTS the opportunity to assign as many courtesy seat riders as possible over the summer.

Kindergarten registrations

We are accepting Junior Kindergarten registrations for 2026-2027. If you, or someone in the neighbourhood you know, is planning on registering a child for next year, please consider doing it soon as this helps with our staffing. Call or stop in at the office for further information.

It has been another busy week at CHN! On Monday, our Grade 8 students showed great focus while completing the PCAP Assessment. The school was also filled with music this week, starting with a "School of Rock" performance from the Sir Ernest MacMillan Rock Band on Wednesday, followed by our own students participating in the Halton Bandshare on Thursday. We also marked the final day for HLF contributions on Thursday; please see below for more information on that.

Community Newsletter Update

Starting next Friday May 9th, families will no longer receive the community message through school messenger as the Hawk Highlights will be posted on our newly designed CH Norton website!

May the books be with you!

Get Ready, Nighthawks… we are going OUTSIDE! The Outdoor Education Team is launching a school-wide Outdoor Reading Challenge for the entire month. We’re inviting every class to take their reading beyond the classroom walls…into the sunshine, under the trees, and onto the field.

Students will be tracking their outdoor reading time while making literacy interactive through "read and find" walks, nature sketching, and buddy reading across the grades. Keep an eye out for pop-up reading spots and nature-inspired journaling taking place all around the school as classes compete to claim the top spot in their division!

To celebrate, the winning classes will enjoy an extra outdoor DPA session in June with Mrs. McAra and Ms. Savo, complete with a refreshing cold treat. We’ll wrap up the month with a school-wide outdoor reading celebration to enjoy the magic of stories together in the fresh air. Grab a book, find your perfect spot, and let’s see which class will rise to the challenge!

Track & Field

During Physical Education classes, our Grade 3, 4, and 5 students will be exploring the fundamentals of running and track events. As part of this learning, any student interested in participating in our Relay Team will have the opportunity to be timed for a 100-metre sprint.

From these sessions, six students per grade will be invited to represent C.H. Norton at the Regional Relay Meet. This event takes place on May 13th, from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm at Hayden High School.

Following the relay event, all students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 will continue to participate in class based track and field events, such as the 50m, 200m, and 400m runs, as well as ball throw and long jump. We are excited to see our students challenge themselves, lead through sport and cheer each other on.

Specific details regarding permission forms and transportation for those participating in the meets will be shared soon.

Celebrating our success for Halton Learning Foundation!

Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) Month has come to a close, and we are pleased to share that we not only met our goal this year, we exceeded it! As a school community, CHN raised $1217 for the Halton Learning Foundation. This means our stage will be surrounded by a massive galaxy of stars for our upcoming Norton’s Got Talent Show, and every class has earned their Karaoke Dance Party with DJs McAra and Savo!

Thank you to all the families who supported our fundraising efforts and helped us achieve this goal. We also want to give a huge shout-out to our student leadership team, who led this initiative and did an incredible job spreading the word among our students, staff, and families.

Each year, HLF supports more than 3,000 students in the HDSB by removing educational barriers and providing essential resources like food, clothing, and school supplies. Your generosity ensures that HLF can continue to say “yes” to every request for support they receive.

While the month is wrapping up, there is still time to make an impact. To learn more or continue your support, please visit the HLF website at haltonlearningfoundation.ca.

Finally, if you are a parent or guardian who could use some assistance with school-related costs, please reach out to your child’s teacher, Ms. Savo or Mrs. McAra. We are always here to help.

Furry friends on the playground

We love seeing our students' furry friends at arrival and dismissal! To ensure the playground remains a safe and comfortable space for all of our students, we ask that pets and their caregivers remain on the grass or at the periphery of the blacktop.

Keeping the main paved areas clear helps everyone feel at ease during these busy times of the day. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school grounds welcoming for all our families!

Class building 2026-2027 family input

Staff will meet in early May to begin organizing classes for the fall. Our goal is to create balanced learning environments that best meet the needs of all students.

Please only complete this class building form if you feel there is important information regarding your child’s placement that our staff is not already aware of.

We ask that you do not request specific teachers by name as class placements and teaching assignments may change up until September. If you are moving or transferring schools, please notify the office as soon as possible. While all family input is carefully considered, the final decision on class placement rests with the school.

Please submit this information by 4:00 PM on Friday, May 8th. Any requests submitted past this deadline may not be considered.

All information provided in this form will be shared with the staff involved in the class-building process.

As the weather finally begins to turn, it has been wonderful to see the definite signs of spring appearing around the school grounds. The warmer days have brought a great energy to the building, perfectly timed with our celebration of Earth Week.

Throughout the week, our students have been busy showing their stewardship for the planet. From "Lights Off" Monday and utilizing our GOOS bins to neighborhood clean-ups and Boomerang lunches, it has been an impactful week of action. We especially loved seeing everyone in their Earth colors and getting creative with our recycle decorating displays!

A huge thank you to Ms. Kilpatrick and our student Eco Team for all of their hard work in planning and organizing these activities. Their leadership helps us all remember the small steps we can take to care for our environment every day.

Please remember, tomorrow is a PA Day and there is no school for students.  We wish all our CHN families a wonderful weekend!

Lost & found

We have quite a few items in our Lost & Found that would really love to find their way home! We’ve set up some tables in the main entrance to make it easier for everyone to see what has been collected.

Please encourage your child/children to take a peek at the tables this week to see if anything belongs to them. If you happen to be dropping by the school, feel free to stop in and have a look yourself.

Just a heads-up that we’ll be clearing everything out at the end of the week. Any items still looking for a home by Friday, May 1st will be donated to a local charity.

Halton Learning Foundation month: Help our stars shine!

April is Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) Month, a time dedicated to removing financial barriers so every student has the food, clothing, and supplies they need to succeed. At C.H. Norton, we are celebrating by creating a galaxy of support for our upcoming Norton’s Got Talent Show. For every $2 donated, we will post a star around our stage to surround our student performers with community kindness while raising money for this great cause.

To make the month even brighter, if we collectively raise $1,000, every class will earn a Karaoke Dance Party hosted by the legendary DJs McAra and Savo! You can contribute through our CHN Nighthawks Halton Learning Foundation Donations Page or learn more about the foundation's impact at haltonlearningfoundation.ca

We also encourage families to attend the board-wide Students in the Spotlight art exhibition and performance on Wednesday, April 29, at 6:00 PM at Burlington Central High School. You can find tickets at Tickets link to help show our students they are supported by a massive crowd.

Finally, if you are a parent or guardian who could use some assistance with school-related costs, please reach out to your child’s teacher or the principal, as we are always here to help.
