Show your support by wearing something pink tomorrow!

Black History Month:

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, today we are shining a spotlight on a true Canadian trailblazer. In fact, she is the very reason we officially celebrate this month nationwide: the Honourable Jean Augustine.

Before entering politics, Jean Augustine was an educator, just like the teachers in your classrooms today. She started out as an elementary school teacher and eventually became a principal, always working hard to build a more inclusive community and advocate for youth.

When she decided to step into politics, she broke major historic barriers:

  • A Historic Election: In 1993, she became the first Black Canadian woman elected to the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament.

  • Cabinet Trailblazer: She later became the first Black Canadian woman to serve in the federal Cabinet.

  • Creating Black History Month: In 1995, she introduced the historic motion that officially designated February as Black History Month across Canada. The motion passed unanimously!

Because of Jean Augustine's vision, we have a dedicated time every year to honor the immense, often-overlooked contributions that Black Canadians have made—and continue to make—to our country's history, culture, and progress.

Her story reminds us that with determination, education, and a passion for your community, you can change the course of history.

OTHS Leaders League:

The OTHS Leaders League is back for semester 2! Please join us in room 118 tomorrow at lunch! All members from Semester 1 are encouraged to return but the group is always open to new members!

Pink day:

This Wednesday is pink day in support of anti-bullying. In 2007 at a high school in Nova Scotia,  a boy wore a pink shirt to school and was bullied. The next day students distributed 50 pink shirts in support of their classmate and to raise awareness and stand up against bullying. Wear your pink on Wednesday to show your support against bullying and promote kindness in our school!

Born in 1922, Alexander broke vital barriers throughout his career, becoming the:

  • First Black Member of Parliament.

  • First Black federal Cabinet Minister.

  • First Black Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

Beyond his groundbreaking "firsts," Alexander dedicated his life to encouraging youth leadership, tirelessly fighting against racism, and championing educational equality.

His profound impact on our country was recognized with the rare honour of a state funeral upon his passing in 2012, and his memory continues to be celebrated, notably with the unveiling of a bronze bust at Queen's Park on January 21, 2024.

Black history month:

As we celebrate black history month, each week we will focus on various accomplishments of Black Canadians through various disciplines including literature,  the arts, politics, athletics and more. Today the extraordinary life of Portia White, a woman who broke through the color barrier to become the first Black Canadian concert singer to achieve international fame.

Born in Truro, Nova Scotia, Portia White possessed a contralto voice of immense power and beauty. At a time when opportunities for Black artists were severely restricted by systemic racism, she refused to be silenced. Her debut in Toronto in 1941 and her subsequent performance at New York’s prestigious Town Hall in 1944 were watershed moments, earning her critical acclaim across North America and Europe.

She paved the way for future generations of Black Canadian artists, including Oscar Peterson and Measha Brueggergosman-Lee.

She has been declared a "Person of National Historic Significance" by the Government of Canada and was honoured with a commemorative postage stamp.

Despite health challenges that cut her touring career short, she dedicated her later years to teaching, mentoring incredible talent in Toronto.
