Black history month: As we celebrate black history month, each day we will focus on various accomplishments of Black Canadians through various disciplines including literature, the arts, politics, athletics and more. Today’s Black History Month spotlight shines on a modern Canadian superhero: Damian Warner. You might know him as an Olympic Gold Medalist, but did you know he holds the unofficial title of 'The World’s Greatest Athlete'? That is because Damian competes in the Decathlon. He doesn't just do one sport; he has to hone his skills in ten different track and field events over two grueling days—including the 100-metre, high jump, pole vault, and javelin. Growing up in London, Ontario, Damian didn't have a lot of money or fancy equipment. He sometimes had to train in unheated hockey arenas in the middle of winter just to get his practice in. But he never let that stop him. At the Tokyo Olympics, he became the first Canadian ever to win gold in the decathlon, setting a new Olympic Record. Damian Warner teaches us that you don't need perfect conditions to achieve greatness—you just need the determination to keep going. |

As a titan of track and field, Bailey captured the world’s attention at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, winning Gold in the 100m dash and setting a new World Record of 9.84 seconds. He followed that historic performance by anchoring the 4x100m relay team to another Gold, cementing his legacy as the "Fastest Man Alive." Beyond the medals, Donovan Bailey represents excellence, determination, and the spirit of breaking barriers. Let’s take a moment to recognize his incredible contribution to the world of sports and his enduring legacy as a Canadian hero. |

Land Acknowledgement: We begin by acknowledging the land and our responsibility to care for and respect all that provides us with life. This land upon which HDSB is situated is on the ancestral, treaty and title lands of the Anishinaabek Ojibwe Michizaagiig Nation, now known as the Mississaugas of the Credit. Michizaagig territory in the past and present continues to host both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The HDSB is committed to continuous knowledge building with respect to actions that address and resolve the ongoing impacts of colonialism. We do this by learning and understanding the true history, treaty obligations, duties and responsibilities and Indigenous Rights while actively maintaining mutually beneficial relationships and collectively respecting and caring for the land. Through athletics and physical activity, we learn values such as teamwork, integrity, balance, and well-being, principles that are deeply connected to Indigenous ways of life and their respect for the land. Sport teaches us to work together, support one another, and care for our physical and mental health, while also reminding us to respect the spaces where we live, learn, and play. By embracing these shared values, we honour the land beneath us and recognize our responsibility to care for both our community and the environment. |

Black History month: As we celebrate Black history month, each day we will focus on various accomplishments of Black Canadians through various disciplines including literature, the arts, politics, athletics and more. We are proud to recognize the monumental achievements of Harry Jerome. In the 1960s, Jerome was one of the fastest men on the planet, setting or equaling seven world records during his career. He is perhaps best known for being the first man to simultaneously hold the world record for both the 100-yard and 100-meter dash. However, Harry Jerome’s legacy is defined by more than speed; it is defined by grit. After suffering a career-threatening thigh injury in 1962 that many thought would end his running days, he staged a "miracle comeback" to win the Bronze medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and Gold at the 1966 Commonwealth Games. An Officer of the Order of Canada and a champion for youth sports, Harry Jerome paved the way for future generations. Today, we celebrate his enduring spirit of perseverance. |

Black History month: As we celebrate black history month, each day we will focus on various accomplishments of Black Canadians through various disciplines including literature, the arts, politics, athletics and more. We are proud to recognize the monumental achievements of George Elliott Clarke, one of Canada’s most dynamic and decorated literary figures. A poet, playwright, and scholar, Clarke has dedicated his career to chronicling the experience of Black Nova Scotians, coining the term "Africadia" to describe this distinct cultural heritage. From his seminal work Whylah Falls to the Governor General’s Award-winning Execution Poems, his writing pulses with the rhythms of jazz, blues, and gospel, transforming history into song. As Canada’s former Parliamentary Poet Laureate and a member of the Order of Canada, Clarke has served as a tireless ambassador for the written word. Black History Month: As we celebrate black history month, each day we will focus on various accomplishments of Black Canadians through various disciplines including literature, the arts, politics, athletics and more. We are delighted to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of Suzette Mayr, one of Canada’s most original and imaginative storytellers. With a career defined by wit and a touch of the surreal, Mayr has consistently pushed the boundaries of Canadian fiction. Her most recent triumph, The Sleeping Car Porter, earned her the prestigious Scotiabank Giller Prize, cementing her place at the forefront of contemporary literature. Through works like Monoceros and Dr. Edith Vane and the Hares of Indiana, she masterfully explores themes of race, queer identity, and the lives of those often left on the margins of history. Her writing is distinct—simultaneously hilarious, heartbreaking, and deeply human. |
