Clubs/Councils - Updated

Clubs and Councils at Garth Webb Secondary School

At Garth Webb Secondary School, we’re proud to offer a wide variety of clubs and councils that allow students to explore their interests, develop leadership skills, and connect with peers who share their passions. From arts and athletics to technology, cultural groups, and wellness initiatives, there’s something for everyone!

This year, we’re excited to introduce a new feature in our newsletter: each week, we will highlight a different club or council so that our families can learn more about the amazing opportunities happening here at GWSS. You’ll get an inside look at what students are doing, how they’re contributing to our school community, and the ways they are developing new skills and friendships.

This week’s highlight: The Aeronautical Aerospace Society
The Aeronautical Aerospace Society is a club for students interested in the exciting world of flight and aerospace. Members work on hands-on projects and participate in competitions that explore the science and technology behind aircraft and aerospace design. Students meet every Wednesday at lunch in Room 3040 with staff sponsor Mr. Boesveld. Whether your student is a budding engineer or simply curious about how things fly, this club is a fantastic opportunity to explore STEM in a collaborative and creative environment.

A brief description of what students do in the club

  • The club aims to provide all students, no matter their skill level or previous knowledge, with the necessary resources and knowledge to build passion based, flight associated engineering projects. Through this initiative, we are aiming to provide an experimental, project based haven of higher learning. We don't just build projects; we build people!

Examples of recent or upcoming activities, projects, or competitions

  • We will be building

    • single stage payload rockets

    • 3D printed gliders

    • And possibly RC aircrafts (drones, planes, etc...)

  • We will be participating in the CANSAT competition (which is an educational event where students design, build, and launch a mini-satellite, or "CanSat" that fits inside the volume of a soft drink can).

Approximate number of students involved

  • Approximately 8-10 students are currently attending each week, with more non-regular attenders simply coming for interest's sake. We have the capacity to grow, however, and all are welcome with no commitment required!

Anything else you’d like families to know about the club (e.g., skills students gain, special achievements, or traditions)

  • We meet every Thursday at lunch in room 3040

  • Skills students will gain: Through passion based projects students will...

    • Become fluent in CAD (Computer Automated Design) software

    • Learn the fundamentals of electronics, and hardware components, including the manipulation of electronic components

    • Experiment with PCB (printed circuit board) fabrication and manufacturing

    • Learn the physics behind these projects.

    • Gain an understanding of FDM 3D printing and how to design for additive manufacturing.

    • Learn fundamental python skills, eventually using such skills to write basic CFD, (computational fluid dynamic), simulations.

Stay tuned for our next spotlight on another one of GW’s amazing clubs! In the meantime, check out our List of Clubs.
