Governor General’s History Award
It is with immense pride that we celebrate Ian Duncan’s receipt of the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching, one of Canada’s most prestigious national recognitions for educators. This honour reflects not only exceptional teaching practice, but also courageous, innovative, and deeply human pedagogy that places students at the centre of meaningful historical inquiry. Through The HISTORYTELLERS Project, Ian created a powerful learning experience that challenged students to engage thoughtfully with Canada’s 2SLGBTQ+ history in partnership with The ArQuives. This work exemplifies the very best of education: rigorous academic thinking, authentic community collaboration, and learning that extends far beyond the classroom walls. Most importantly, it empowered students to become historians, storytellers, and allies handling complex histories with integrity, care, and respect.
