It’s Remembrance Week at GWSS. Please wear a poppy. Today we honour and thank veterans, their descendents, and those who serve our community from the Canadian Legion. Poppy sales are now happening in the main office and library.  How it works for those who are unfamiliar; you place your money right into the white box and then take a poppy to wear and show your support to Canada’s Veterans. Through your generosity, donations to the Legion's Poppy Fund supports all of Canada's Veterans and their families. The Canadian Legion states that the basic purpose of the poppy funds is to provide immediate assistance to ex-servicemen and women in need. Any amount is greatly appreciated and it is CASH ONLY.

Flavour danger! Although e-liquid flavours may sound tasty, heating e-liquid actually produces a number of harmful chemicals. You would not eat an arsenic lollipop or formaldehyde popsicle, so why would you vape them? Do not treat your health like an experiment

Join us for hands-on projects, competitions, and opportunities you won’t find anywhere else. From computational fluid dynamics simulations, to remote controlled planes and drones to single stage pay load rockets to sub orbital satellites, this club is designed for anybody with an open mind and is ready to learn. We are meeting TODAY at lunch in room 3040 — no experience needed. The sky is no longer the limit!

Ready to look behind the curtain of modern technology? The STEM club is hosting a special, virtual lecture with a total legend in the world of Artificial Intelligence: Dr. David Duvenaud from the Vector Institute and the University of Toronto. He's literally working on how to make sure future AI models don't go rogue and that they stay helpful for all of us. Think of it as advanced computer science with real-world impact! He'll be sharing his latest research from his work with the Claude AI on how to manage the risks of powerful AI. This is a rare chance to hear from a top researcher shaping the future of Computer Science and AI Alignment. The lecture is on October 15th during periods 4 and 5, and will be streamed live in Portable 9! All you need to do is come grab a permission form from Mr. Marchetti in the math office by the end of the day TODAY.

An unbelievable year for the chargers golf team, and it is not over yet. Our boys team of Greyson Clarke, Sam Woods, Josh Hunt and Edun Singleton. place second at the halton finals. With Greyson shooting the best score of the day 71. Olivia Liu has had an incredible season winning all three tournaments. They are all off to GHAC next week. WIsh them luck.

Huge congratulations to Garth Webb’s Cross Country Team, who raced yesterday at Bronte Creek! Our Novice Boys team had an outstanding performance, placing 4th overall, with Cooper Dodgson finishing 1st individually. The Junior Boys team also ran strong, placing 5th. Our Senior Girls team finished 3rd overall, with Liana Mohamed placing 7th individually. Lastly, the Senior Boys team placed 4th, with Henry Zhong setting a personal best and finishing 7th overall. Way to go, Chargers!

In 2015 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Canada released their report that included 94 calls to action. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a direct response to Call to Action 80, which called for a federal statutory day of commemoration. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools and colonization is a vital component of the reconciliation process. Today we honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Together we can take action by tuning in to the “day to listen” broadcasts on the radio across Canada today, following Indigenous content creators on social media, supporting Indigenous-owned businesses and organizations, wearing orange, and talking with our friends, family, and neighbours about how we can participate in reconciliation. We hope you take some time today to reflect and take action.

Good morning Garth Webb, We want to take a moment to remind everyone of the importance of being respectful and responsible members of our community — not just inside the school, but in the neighbourhoods around us as well. We are still receiving emails and phone calls from community members, particularly in the area along West Oak Trails, from the school down to the Domino’s Pizza plaza. The concerns are consistent: loud behaviour, littering, and a general lack of care for the environment and for people’s property. This is a reminder to please clean up after yourselves.Your actions reflect not only on you, but on our entire school.

This is a reminder that you are not permitted to visit another high school or elementary school during the school day without prior permission from that school's principal. This includes entering the building, being on school grounds, or spending time in their parking lot. Doing so without authorization may be considered trespassing and could result in formal consequences. Similarly, students from other schools are not permitted to visit Garth Webb Secondary School during the school day unless they have received prior approval from a GWSS administrator. If you are planning to meet a friend from another school, please arrange to do so off school property and outside of school hours.

What a fantastic result for our Charger golf team at yesterday's tournament! A huge shoutout to Olivia Lee for her incredible performance as the top girl in all of Halton. The boys also had an outstanding day, with Sam Woods finishing second among high school boys and Grayson Clarke securing third place in the Open level division. Thanks to their strong rounds, our boys team finished an impressive second overall in the tournament. Keep up the great work, Chargers!

This is the 45th year of the Terry FOx run and so far, the Marathon of Hope has raised about 850 million dollars to aid with cancer research. Hey Chargers! Garth Webb's Annual Terry Fox run is coming up! Terry was an inspiring role model, leader and advocate for cancer research (at the time). Terry Fox's last words were “If I don't make it, the Marathon of Hope must continue.” This week the grade 12 leadership class will be running various events along with trivia announcements every day to honour Terry Fox’s last wish! Listen closely this week for your chance to win amazing prizes and make sure to donate through your homeroom class for the   chance to win a pizza party! You will all be shown a slide show containing general information of Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope which you can use to answer the Trivia questions. Happy Friday, Chargers! Terry Fox ran through six provinces and covered 5,373 kilometers before he had to stop in Thunder Bay, Ontario. His goal was to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research, and even though he couldn’t finish, his determination sparked a movement that has now raised over $850 million worldwide. His legacy reminds us that one person’s courage and determination can inspire millions.One week from today, we’ll be participating in our Terry Fox Run, so continue to bring your change and donate through your class QR codes—every dollar counts! The top fundraising class will win a pizza party. Starting Monday, you can also donate to get a specific teacher pied in the face, buckets for donations will be in the main office. Good morning Chargers! Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope on April 12, 1980, by dipping his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s, Newfoundland. What makes this moment so powerful is that Terry had lost his right leg to cancer just three years earlier, yet he trained for months on his prosthetic leg to prepare for the run. His determination showed Canadians that one person’s courage could make a huge difference, and his journey quickly began to inspire a nation. Our Terry Fox Run is coming up next Friday, September 26th, You can support it by  making sure to keep scanning those QR codes around the school to donate to your class fundraiser. Remember, the class that raises the most donations will win a pizza party! Don’t forget your change, as next Tuesday we will be holding our bake sale at lunch. Good morning, Chargers! Terry Fox was only 22 years old when he began his Marathon of Hope, running across Canada on one leg after losing the other to cancer. Each day, he pushed himself to run 42 kilometers, the distance of a full marathon, to raise money for cancer research and to show the power of determination. In honour of Terry Fox, we are holding our Run next Friday, September 26th. You can support it by donating to your class fundraiser through our school's QR codes, which are posted around the school. As an incentive to donate, the class that raises the most will win a pizza party! Keep an eye out next week. We'll have special events at lunch, including a Bake Sale on Tuesday, where you can grab a sweet treat while supporting the cause. Don't forget to bring your change. Let’s honour Terry’s courage as we count down to our run!

Good morning musicians! Garth Webb’s music ensembles are starting up next week! If you missed the information meeting, you’re still welcome to join us, just come to the first rehearsal. Junior Band starts Monday after school, Senior Band starts Tuesday after school, Jazz Band starts Thursday at lunch, and Friday Choir starts next Friday at lunch. To support a safe and respectful environment for all students, we will be regularly monitoring and clearing the washrooms throughout the day. We encourage students to socialize and connect with peers in designated common areas around the school. Our goal is to ensure that all students feel safe, respected, and comfortable throughout the school day.

Hello Chargers, this a quick reminder that the game development club will be having our first meeting today at lunch in room 2039.

Vaping does not relieve stress. People addicted to nicotine have strong urges to vape that make them feel bad when they have not had nicotine for a while. These cravings go away for a short period when they use nicotine, but they come back. Nicotine relieves cravings, not stress or the causes of stress. Young people who vape are more likely to start smoking cigarettes and try other drugs. So please take care of yourself and stop vaping.

This message is from the DECA business club.  Over the past 2 days, the DECA club hosted information sessions after school.  To follow up from these meetings, anyone who has questions or needs assistance with signing up for the DECA club are asked to drop in to room 3012 during the lunch break today or tomorrow.  Again, please come to room 3012 during lunch on Thursday and Friday this week to get your DECA club questions answered!Are you interested in law and building your oral advocacy skills? Garth Webb’s competitive mock trial team is getting started! No prior knowledge of law is needed, and we are looking in particular for grade 9s and 10s along with our grade 11s and 12s! Are you looking for a fun way to complete your volunteer hours? Do you enjoy being creative and making someone’s day a little brighter? Then come to Sending Sunshine club! In this club, you’ll get to make greeting cards for seniors in local retirement communities, and you will receive volunteer hours for your work. Come to our information session at lunch in the ESL room (Room 1043) on Monday, September 15th to find out more! Anyone is welcome. Hope to see you there!

Please remember that students are not permitted to gather, socialize, or vape in the washrooms.These spaces are intended for individual use only. To support a safe and respectful environment for all students, we will be regularly monitoring and clearing the washrooms throughout the day. If students are found consistently gathering in washrooms, school-based consequences will be applied, and parents/guardians will be notified. We encourage students to socialize and connect with peers in designated common areas around the school. Our goal is to ensure that all students feel safe, respected, and comfortable throughout the school day.

The DECA business club will be hosting our final information session today after school.  We mainly want to invite students in grades 11 and 12 to attend. We need to continue to work together in removing vaping from our school!  Vaping in our school is a behavior that not only violates school policy, but also poses health risks to our entire school community. We want to remind everyone that our school is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students. Vaping and smoking are not permitted on school grounds, and we take these violations seriously. If you see someone vaping or using substances, please report it to a teacher or staff member or to your parent/guardian. We encourage you to make healthy choices and look out for one another. This week we will be making daily announcements in regards to vaping.

Locker distribution is starting on Monday. Students will claim a locker with their homeroom class so please follow instructions from your teacher. Grade 9 and 10 students will claim lockers on Monday. Grade 11 students on Wednesday, and Grade 12 students on Friday. Locker numbers and combinations are to be shared with your homeroom teachers. You must bring a working lock in order to claim a locker.

This announcement is for any boys (senior and Junior) that are interested in playing volleyball this year. There is going to be a meeting at lunch on Friday in the gym to get permission forms and the first tryout is going to be Tuesday Sept 9 after school. Students who are driving themselves to school are reminded to register their vehicles with the student parking pass form on our website. Students are permitted to park in the main parking lot near the front of the school only. The portable parking lot and the parking lot on the east side of the building are strictly reserved for staff members. Staff and students are also permitted to park in the Town of Oakville parking lot near the playground.

Please remember that locker distribution is not happening until next week so please do not claim a locker. If you put a lock on a locker prematurely it may be cut off. Students will carry their belongings with them this week and then locker distribution will begin next week. More instructions will be shared soon.
