Director of Education Curtis Ennis Receives Award for Community Leadership
Curtis Ennis, Director of Education for the Halton District School Board (HDSB), has been named the recipient of the Community Award as part of the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton’s (CCAH) 2025 4 Pillars Awards.

The award was presented to Director Ennis on Saturday, May 3 at the CCAH’s annual May Soirée, an annual event that celebrates Canadian Black and Caribbean cultures, raises funds for local BIPOC children and youth living in Halton who experience various barriers and recognizes individuals in the Halton community. The CCAH 4 Pillars Awards are presented to individuals who demonstrate leadership in alignment with the organization’s four foundational pillars: Education, Community, Culture and Harmony.
The Community Award recognizes individuals who show exceptional commitment to making a positive impact within the community. As Director of Education for the HDSB and through the development of the HDSB’s 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan, Director Ennis has continued to focus on creating inclusive and welcoming learning environments where kindness is centred, all students feel a genuine sense of belonging, human rights are upheld and systemic barriers are addressed. His impact has been felt significantly by all students across the HDSB, many of whom have shared how his leadership has shaped their educational experience.

“His approach is thoughtful and grounded in ensuring that all students feel heard, especially when it comes to issues that affect Black communities,” says Aya Abdellatief, HDSB student. “His willingness to engage with our experiences and to create space for these conversations speaks volumes. This level of attentiveness has helped build a more inclusive environment, where Black students can feel supported, valued and understood.”
“Seeing someone who shares the same cultural background as me achieve so much reminds me that my potential is limitless,” says Reesee Augustine, HDSB student. “It’s inspiring to watch Mr. Ennis break down systemic barriers and show the world what we’re made of. Him and his accomplishments make me feel proud, motivated and ready to attack the world ahead. If he can do it, so can I.”
Other students describe Director Ennis as a role model and a compassionate leader.
“I would say that Mr. Ennis’ unwavering care and compassion for all students is truly heartwarming and admirable. He is a genuine and humble role model who continuously leads by example,” says Jasmine Johnson, HDSB student.
“Mr. Ennis is a thoughtful and genuine person,” added London Higgins, HDSB student.
