Building Connection Through Sport: Community Pathways Program Students Celebrate Athletics Day
Students from across the Halton District School Board's (HDSB) Regional Community Pathways Programs (CPP) came together at Nelson High School for the first Futures CPP Athletics Day, a celebration of connection and achievement that marked the culmination of a year of shared experiences and learning.
The Athletics Day brought together students from all seven HDSB Community Pathways Programs for a day of outdoor activities, friendly competition and social connection. Held under sunny skies, the event provided students with opportunities to challenge themselves, build relationships and celebrate one another's successes.
The Athletics Day was the final event in a series of regional gatherings held throughout the school year. Students participated in a variety of experiences designed to foster community and expand interests, including bowling, soccer and movie outings. Together, these events create opportunities for students from different schools to connect beyond the classroom while developing confidence, independence and transferable life skills.
The initiative aligns with several priorities outlined in the HDSB's 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan, including Kindness, Connection and Community; Mental Health and Well-Being; and Learning, Engagement and Achievement. By bringing students together through shared experiences, the program helps strengthen relationships, support student well-being and provide meaningful learning opportunities tailored to students' unique interests and aspirations.
"The goal of these regional events is multi-faceted," says Audrey Draaisma, Acting Communication Centre Assistant for Nelson CPP. "We want to build community, foster inclusion and provide out-of-class experiences for students to expand their interests and skill areas. The Athletics Day was a wonderful way to finish the year. The weather was beautiful, the students were engaged and had lots of fun."
A key part of the day's success was the support of Nelson High School's student leaders. Led by teacher Erin Williams, the Leadership students helped organize and facilitate activities, while encouraging participants and celebrating their accomplishments throughout the day.
"The Leadership students were incredible," says Draaisma. "They not only helped run the activities, but they encouraged our students and celebrated their successes. It was a fabulous day."
Events like the Futures CPP Athletics Day continue to demonstrate the power of inclusive learning experiences that bring students together and create lasting memories across the HDSB community.
