Congratulations to all of the 2020 HDSB Student Excellence Award Winners 

The virtual Celebration of Student Excellence event will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 14​ to recognize this year’s Student Excellence recipients. The event will be a video honouring 104 outstanding students who are recipients of this year’s Student Excellence Award. The recording of this event will remain online for families to view afterwards. 

 
Each year, elementary and secondary schools in the HDSB nominate one student per school for this recognition. Students can only receive this honour once in their school career. The event has been a Board tradition since 1984.

 
The nominations for these outstanding students cite qualities such as “striving for excellence”, “positive attitude”, “honesty”, “integrity”, “being empathetic to others”, “involvement in community”, “dedicated athlete”, and “inclusivity”.

​​Adam McAlpine
Aldershot Elementary School
Grade 8

Adam McAlpine is a student whose achievements are a true reflection of his motivation, commitment and perseverance towards a goal of excellence in all of his pursuits. He has a tremendous work ethic and approaches new learning opportunities earnestly. Adam is an accomplished musician, athlete and a valued member of the Aldershot school community through his many contributions.
Lauren Wittchen
Alexander's Public School
Grade 8

Lauren is very involved in athletics, band, and is also an amazing leader and role model in our school. She eagerly helps out with many sports teams for younger students and is always dependable and there to lend a hand to those in need. Lauren maintains a high academic average and excellent learning skills.


Saihaj Shoker
Alton Village Public School
Grade 8

Saihaj is a respectful, kind, caring and thoughtful student, who always considers others. Her mature work ethic, responsible behaviour and positive attitude make her a natural leader. She is involved in our school community with Me to We, Eco team, cross country, athletic leadership, GSA club, grade 1 lunch helpers, girls’ volleyball team, and senior band. Saihaj understands the importance of hard work, kindness, respect, dedication and self-reflection and she demonstrates them beautifully everyday.
David Crichton
Brant Hills Public School
Grade 8

Throughout his 10 years at Brant Hills, David has consistently been a positive influence in the school community both academically and athletically. He is a well rounded young man who seeks out leadership opportunities in all areas and willingly helps students and adults throughout the school. David’s determination and drive to be successful is evident in his academic achievements, athletic successes and leadership skills.
Jacob Albanese
Bruce T. Lindley Public School
Grade 6

Jacob demonstrates excellence, interest, and creativity in all subject areas. He looks for ways to enhance every moment of his day, and those of others as well. Jacob contributes to our community by embracing many leadership roles (office support, nutrition programs), clubs and teams (volleyball, soccer, badminton).


Nila Natkunendiraan
Burlington Central Elementary School
Grade 8

Nila is a very hard working and capable young lady who excels in academics and is actively engaged in many clubs and activities at Burlington Central Elementary. Nila is extremely outgoing, takes on an active role in her education and models positive behaviour, choices, and interactions with other classmates and her teachers. She gives her best effort to all of the assignments and work.
Rachael Erickson
C.H. Norton Public School
Grade 8

Rachael is a strong student, caring friend, positive role model and dedicated athlete inside and outside of school. Self-reliant and independent, she rises above adversity and models a growth mindset in all that she does. Whether on the ice, in the gymnasium, or the classroom, Rachael seeks out feedback from teachers and coaches, and willingly applies the advice offered to achieve her goals.
Hannah Mack
Central Public School
Grade 6​

Hannah is a dedicated, hardworking and empathetic student who consistently puts forth her best efforts. She recognizes opportunities to further her learning and acts as a positive role model to her peers and younger learning buddy. An excellent team player, she comes to school with a positive attitude, greeting students and staff in the hall with a warm smile. She seeks out opportunities to help out within the classroom as well as the entire school.
Cate Cockshutt
Charles R. Beaudoin Public School​
Grade 8​

Cate is an outstanding overall student who is very involved in all aspects of school life at CRB. She is a leader on the Senior Basketball team and a member of our Athletic Council and WE club. Cate is a high achieving student and a positive role model for all students at our school.

​Sydney Parvin
Clarksdale Public School ​
Grade 6

Sydney demonstrates excellence through her many achievements and contributions to our Clarksdale community. A conscientious and responsible student who gives her best and inspires others to do so, Sydney takes an active part in the school community both academically and in extra-curriculars. She helps with the daily school announcements, is a member of the Welcome Team, the school volleyball team, LEGO Robotics Club, Diversity Club and has a major role in our upcoming school musical.
Rachel McPhail
Dr. Charles Best Public School
Grade 5

Rachel’s quiet and kind ways are appreciated by her peers and teachers. Rachel is often the first person to help out whenever needed, be it for a teacher or a peer. At Dr. Charles Best, Rachel is involved as a main character in our school play, Kindergarten Lunch Monitoring, Morning Announcements, all intramural sports as well as the Cross Country and Track and Field Team.
Rachel Gibbons
Florence Meares Public School
Grade 8

Rachel consistently sets strong goals for herself, both academically and in her co-curricular commitments. She approaches her school work with a positive attitude, always seeking feedback and looking for ways to better her performance. A dedicated member of a number of sports teams, clubs and groups, she can be counted on to always do her very best, quietly inspiring others to do the same.
Matthew Timotin
Frontenac Public School
Grade 8

During his time at Frontenac, Matthew has consistently gone above and beyond in his academic pursuits, participation in extracurricular activities, and in his conduct as a member of the Frontenac community. As a student who can be counted on to put forth his best effort in all subject areas, he frequently seeks ways to demonstrate his learning that makes his experience at school interesting and engaging. He serves his school community with distinction, acting as Frontenac’s representative for Halton’s Student Senate.
Graydon Tregunno
Glenview Public School
Grade 6

Graydon is a dedicated and hard working member of the Glenview community. He strives for excellence in all academic areas and is a positive leader in the classroom. His calm, polite and patient manner make him a valuable partner or group leader. Involved in many clubs and teams at Glenview, Graydon is extremely organized and comes to school each day with a positive mindset for his learning.
Avery Carey
John T. Tuck Public School
Grade 8

Avery is a hard-working student who excels in her academics while participating in extracurricular school activities. She participates in inter-school athletics and is an active member of our music programs all the while maintaining excellent study habits.


Evan Romachyk
John William Boich Public School
Grade 8

Evan is an outstanding and remarkable student who strives for success and helps to build a strong school community. Evan is an exceptional student who has been a strong member of our student leadership body for a number of years. He also participates in and plays on numerous bands and sport teams as well as runs the Jr Model UN club for his peers. Evan exemplifies our Jaguar Ways of Respect, Kindness, Honesty and Forgiveness on a daily basis and is highly recommended and extremely deserving of this award.
Abigail Ley
Kilbride Public School
Grade 8

Abigail epitomizes all the characteristics of a Student Excellence recipient by her ability to consistently achieve above and beyond expectations in every subject area. She takes initiative and actively participates within and outside of the classroom and challenges herself to reach her full potential. A natural, well liked and respected leader, she is a role model for our younger students as a leader, mentor and participant in extracurriculars.
Sienna Sfredda-Kacur
King’s Road Public School
Grade 6

Sienna has demonstrated quiet, positive leadership throughout her time at King’s Road. She is active as a Student Ambassador as well as involved with Student Voice. Sienna participates as the student representative on our school wellness team bringing meaningful ideas to further impact our school culture. She challenges herself daily both academically and physically playing on our school teams including volleyball and basketball. Sienna advocates for her classmates and is well deserving of this award.​
Leo McMahan
Lakeshore Public School
Grade 6

An exemplary role model for his peers, Leo approaches all learning opportunities with a high degree of enthusiasm, passion, and curiosity. A highly motivated, self-directed learner who diligently strives for excellence in everything he does, Leo demonstrates a superior degree of creativity, artistic ability, athletic prowess, and academic performance. When presented with a challenge, Leo displays perseverance, flexibility, innovation, and superior problem-solving skills.
Ishita Tokas
Maplehurst Public School
Grade 6

Ishita is a responsible and enthusiastic learner who values and respects her peers, teachers and the Maplehurst community. Ishita is an inclusive student who always demonstrates our school motto, "We Care, We Share, We Dare." Kind, honest and a student who always does her best, her ability to approach tasks calmly and with a positive mindset sets the tone in the classroom. Ishita's participation in school activities such as volleyball, recorder group and peer mentoring for math are valued at Maplehurst.
George Favell
Mohawk Gardens Public School
Grade 6

George is a kind, respectful student who is involved in all aspects of school life. His maturity and embodiment of global citizenship values are reflected in the way he speaks up and stands up for other students. He demonstrates outstanding effort in all areas of learning skills and is a strong academic student. This year, he has overcome challenges with a positive attitude and optimism, he continuously models our schools values and beliefs.
Nolan Holland
Orchard Park Public School
Grade 8

Nolan is extremely polite and respectful with all staff members and peers. He is involved in a multitude of activities including athletics, community work and leadership within many clubs. He is a very strong student academically and is always looking for ways to improve his work or go above and beyond the expectations. Nolan is a great role model for his peers and demonstrates a humble confidence.
Grace Carden
Paul A. Fisher Public School
Grade 6

Grace is a well rounded student who excels in academics, enjoys being a member of clubs and teams and demonstrates responsibility by maintaining the school iPads and Chromebooks daily. Grace is kind and empathetic towards others. She seeks change when an idea for improving the school for herself and other students is a possibility.


Ali Thomson
Pauline Johnson Public School
Grade 6

For many years, Ali has shown exemplary skills in all areas of academics, learning skills, and leadership. This year, Ali, independent and self-motivated, has displayed excellent leadership skills by doing morning announcements with great enthusiasm, has been a lunchroom helper in younger classes and helped younger students at recess. Ali’s involvement in school activities is incredible too, as she participates in volleyball and cross country, as well as school choir, the Silver Birch reading club and our Remembrance Day service. Ali’s academics remain at the top of her class.
Charlotte Isabel Flannery
Pineland Public School
Grade 8

Charlotte is highly involved in school (volleyball, GSA, Me to We, Yearbook, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band) and community (Burlington theatre group, Junior Civitan). She always has a positive attitude, treats others with respect and kindness, and is a strong leader. Charlotte is an enthusiastic student who displays a positive attitude at all times, no matter the situation.
Josie Pearson
Rolling Meadows Public School
Grade 8

Josie is an exceptional student who demonstrates excellence in all aspects of school life. Well respected by her peers and teachers, she approaches all activities with optimism and allows her contagious positive energy to uplift others. An avid learner, athletic and a leader, this member of Student Council always makes a point to recognize when others have gone above and beyond for her and thanks them for providing her with new opportunities.
Emily Hiller
Ryerson Public School
Grade 6

Emily is an exceptional and well rounded student who demonstrates outstanding achievement in citizenship, student leadership, athletics and self-improvement. As a model citizen of the Ryerson community, Emily volunteers and participates in school based clubs and activities such as, volleyball, choir, Me to We, cross country among many others. Academically, Emily is always seeking feedback and looking for ways to grow as a learner and leader among her peers.
Kristina Rehm
Sir Ernest MacMillan Public School
Grade 8

Kristina is a student who always works hard academically, listens to feedback from teachers and peers and works hard to improve herself in all areas. She is an integral part of the MacMillan student community as seen through her involvement in Leadership, Eco Club, morning announcements, the school play and as our Student Senate representative. Kristina always has a positive outlook on things and strives to find healthy strategies for conflict resolution.
Dylan Kooiman
Tecumseh Public School
Grade 8

With his positive attitude, strong leadership skills and dedication to making Tecumseh an inclusive environment, Dylan strives for excellence in all subject areas and within the school community. He is an enthusiastic participant of his Tiger Team, Announcement Crew and he looks for opportunities to contribute to a positive school climate. Each day, Dylan comes to school with a smile on his face and enthusiastically greets all staff and students.
Elly Moore
Tom Thomson Public School
Grade 6

Elly demonstrates strong academic achievement through her excellent initiative, motivation and class participation. Her commitment to Tom Thomson is evident in her participation in everything from sports, to student led committees and most importantly, in demonstrating quiet, thoughtful leadership for her peers. A modest, kind classmate who sets high standards for herself and works very hard to achieve them, Elly is involved in her community through her study of piano and as a competitive swimmer and avid mountain biker.
​Secondary Students

​ Solina Quinton
Aldershot High School
Grade 12

Solina is a hard-working, positive, kind and caring student who has an above 90% average. She was selected as our Schulich Leader Scholarship nominee this year. As a natural leader and role model, Solina represents the Student Council as our Deputy Prime Minister and is a competitive coach for young developmental gymnasts.


Michael Barnett
Burlington Central High School
Grade 11

Michael is an exceptional student who consistently welcomes extra challenges at school, in the classroom and within the school community. He serves as the Deputy Prime Minister in the school’s Student Parliament, is a volunteer math tutor, and is on both the Reach Team and Golf Team. Michael also represents BCHS at the school board’s HDSB Student Senate, where he has provided valuable insights in shaping what student leadership looks like at school and beyond.
Garrett Miller-Junk
Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School
Grade 12

Garrett is a disciplined and conscientious student who applies himself to reach his full potential in all of his courses. He participates, and very often takes on a leadership role, in a variety of clubs, competitions and initiatives within the school and the community. Garrett has often used a classroom in his spare time to help tutor fellow students in their math studies. 


Sarah Howe
M.M. Robinson High School
Grade 12

A kind and enthusiastic leader, Sarah is a proactive person, and a hard working role model who is involved in many clubs, teams, and activities at our school and tirelessly supports her peers. Her involvement at MMR includes USB, Student Events Committee, Link Crew, Athletic Council, Yearbook, field hockey, ice hockey, soccer, concert band, jazz band, Ram Revue award recipient. Sarah shows her leadership skills through her involvement as the MC for school events, the Relay for Life Committee, and captaincy for both hockey teams.
Keagan Hall
Nelson High School
Grade 12

Keagan is outstanding in all aspects of school life. Academically, he maintains an over 90% average in a demanding course load. He has been an exceptional student and athlete all four years at Nelson. Keagan has been a leader both in our football and basketball programs, never missing a practice or a game. He always displays leadership on the field of play. He is an all-around great person, polite, courteous and the perfect ambassador for Nelson High School.
Wanda Janaeska
Robert Bateman High School
Grade 12

Wanda has represented Bateman in Waterloo and Halton Math contests, on our Badminton Team, and as a member of our School REACH Team. Very active in her local community, she has helped run events on behalf of Me to We, the MSA, Student Council, 30 Hour Famine, and many other student groups. She has been able to maintain a high academic average and has earned more than 500 community service hours.

Centennial Public School
Grade 8

Drew achieves high academic grades, participates in a plethora of extracurricular activities, and is one of the kindest and most supportive students within the school. He is constantly the first to take initiative and offer to help staff and students. Drew is an excellent student and leader within the school and the greater Georgetown community.
 
Maggie Irvine
Ethel Gardiner Public School
Grade 8

Maggie is kind, respectful and humble. She was elected by her peers to represent them as Student Parliament Prime Minister. She started the Jug of Hope campaign to collect pop tabs so the aluminum can be used to make wheelchairs for kids in the community. Maggie is a well-rounded young lady who leads by example and quietly demonstrates to others that they should get involved, take risks and enrich their school experience.
Esther Mathew
George Kennedy Public School
Grade 5

Esther is a natural leader who inspires confidence in others. She is a keen and curious student who is actively engaged in her learning and is also a skilled athlete. She is involved in WE Club, Learning Buddies, Cross-Country, Lunch Monitoring, Intramurals and the Radio Club. Esther models positive behaviour and is quick to help her peers and adults in the building.
Claire Smith
Glen Williams Public School
Grade 5

Claire is a role model who demonstrates care and compassion. She is a leader in Flights Crew, Green Team, special lunches and Kinderguardian and is an enthusiastic participant in cross country, volleyball, track and field and choir. Claire has garnered the respect and admiration of her peers and teachers for her innate desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
Ewan Haasbroek
Harrison Public School
Grade 5

Ewan consistently demonstrates strong leadership skills and is supportive, kind and always ready and willing to help out younger students and make them laugh. Actively involved in extracurriculars, Ewan demonstrates fair play, sportsmanship, and positive encouragement toward others. He is always happy, upbeat and has helped to foster a successful, positive school community​ at Harrison.
Lauren Perry
Joseph Gibbons Public School
Grade 5

Lauren is a quiet, caring and determined leader at Joseph Gibbons. Lauren ensures her work is completed to the best of her ability and is involved in the arts, athletics, and leadership opportunities throughout the school. She always has a smile on her face, goes out of her way to spread kindness, and creates an inclusive world around her. 


Sophie MacKay
Limehouse Public School
Grade 5

Sophie is a respectful, kind, inquisitive, engaging and quiet leader. She demonstrates a positive attitude and helpful nature as she diligently strives to create a better school community. She is genuine and honest and emulates empathy. Sophie is actively involved in school activities including milk helpers, announcement team, Grow-It-Green-Team, cross country, choir, soccer, Kindergarten Helpers and volleyball. 

Hadley Stowe
McKenzie-Smith Bennett Public School
Grade 8

Hadley is deeply respected and beloved by her peers. She strives for excellence, thinks outside the box, listens attentively and is a collaborative problem solver. She is polite, personable, kind, caring and helpful. Not only is her achievement in all academic areas outstanding, she also finds time to be involved in Student Leaders and Badminton at the school. 


Chloe Cambouris
Park Public School
Grade 5

Chloe has been a leader at the school since JK. Each year she challenges herself to be better. Chloe is helpful, supportive, encouraging, resourceful, kind and empathetic. She is a team player, actively involved in all types of activities including athletics, arts, games and yoga. 


Katelyn Ruch
Pineview Public School
Grade 5

Katelyn is actively involved as a WE Ambassador, and participant in the cross country team, choir, volleyball and Green Panther. She demonstrates high academic achievement and is always looking for opportunities to go above and beyond and help others. Katelyn is an excellent friend and classmate to her peers. 


Alannah McIntyre
Robert Little Public School
Grade 5

Alannah is kind, supportive, helpful and a hard worker. She is self-motivated, continuously asking for opportunities and feedback to improve. She is a leader in her classes and the Athletic Council. It’s Alannah’s nature to help younger students and those who need some extra help finding friends on the playground. 


Cody Torraville
Silver Creek Public School
Grade 8

Cody is a conscientious student who strives to do his best both academically and when undertaking athletic pursuits. He demonstrates a positive attitude and conducts himself with integrity. Cody’s unfailing kindness, empathy and strong work ethic make him a natural leader. He is highly regarded by his peers and teachers because he treats others with respect and helps create an inclusive and welcoming school community.
Ian Cameron
Stewarttown Public School
Grade 8

Ian is a model citizen for his peers. He is kind, respectful, inclusive and supportive towards his peers, using his keen sense of humour to make connections and ensure his classmates feel a sense of belonging. Ian demonstrates his leadership skills both inside the classroom and in his role as Student Parliament Prime Minister and in numerous extracurricular activities.

Briana Chen
Acton District High School
Grade 12

Briana is hard working, dedicated, reliable and always willing to help. She is kind, gracious and enthusiastic and demonstrates an exemplary work ethic. Briana achieves top marks in her academic program, promotes school spirit and remains highly committed to her involvement in school activities. Briana is an excellent student and well-rounded person who exemplifies a love of learning.
Jackson Macor
Georgetown District High School
Grade 12

Andrei is an outstanding student. He has been an honour roll recipient in national and international math competitions, is co-President of the Model United Nations (MUN) team and won five ”Best Delegate” awards at MUN competitions. Andrei is captain of the Basketball and Volleyball teams and has received numerous athletic awards. Andrei has shown leadership by assuming the role of Regional Director for the HDSB’s Student Senate and representing the school on numerous political youth councils. Additionally, he has taken action on the climate crisis by publishing articles in local and national newspapers and successfully advocating for Oakville to declare a climate change emergency. Andrei led the organization of Halton’s only TEDx conference for youth, providing a platform for students to share their ideas with the local and global community. Finally, Andrei is the founder of a tutoring company, which provides meaningful employment to student-tutors and supports the learning needs of children of all ages.​

He has participated in the WOSS Law & Mock Trial championship and on the WOSS Soccer team. Lana has consistently excelled academically throughout her high school years. She is a member of the school’s Youth in Action group which leads a "We Walk for Water" event that raised $10,000 dollars to help bring water to a village in Tanzania. Having completed more than 140 hours of community service so far, Lana makes it a priority to give back to her local and global communities.
Matthew Cleland
Gary Allan High School - Milton
Grade 12

Matthew has overcome serious medical issues that interrupted his regular high school studies when he was in Grade 9 and 10. There were many times that his studies were put on hold as he dealt with the physical challenges that took priority and therefore, now as an adult, Matthew has been able to concentrate on his studies through the HDSB Adult Learning classes to achieve his final credits in Functions and Calculus with a goal to study Biochemistry at university.
Andrew Sabino
Milton District High School
Grade 12

Andrew, known as the “Voice of MD”, is an active member of the Student Athletic Association, Equity and Wellness Club and volunteers his time with the school’s hockey team, the Milton Minor Hockey Association and his elementary school library. Andrew is a dedicated honours student who is kind, caring and always goes out of his way to help others and make them feel comfortable.
