The 30th annual Halton Skills Competition, hosted by the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board, will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at Craig Kielburger Secondary School (1151 Ferguson Dr, Milton).
The skills competition will take place from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., with the results revealed and celebrated at the medals presentation starting at 5:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.
Approximately 1,000 elementary and secondary students from both Halton boards will compete in a wide range of skills. Elementary students in Grade 4-8 will take part in activities such as the Technology Challenge, Green Energy Challenge, Distance Challenge, Lego Robotics, and TV/Video Production competitions.
Secondary school students will compete in the following events: 2D Character Animation, Architectural Technology & Design, Auto Collision Repair, Auto Painting, Auto Service Technology, Baking, Cabinetmaking, Carpentry Individual, Carpentry Team of 2, Culinary Arts, Distance Challenge, Electrical Installations, Electronics, Fashion Design, Floristry, Graphic Design-Presentation, Graphic Design-Studio Production, Hairstyling, Health Care, Home Building, Horticulture and Landscape, Landscape Design, Mechanical CAD, Photography, Precision Machining, Small Powered Equipment, TV & Video Production, Robotics & Control Systems, Robotics Team of 4, Website Development, and Welding. New to this year’s competition is coding for secondary students.
Precision Machining, Welding and Computer Aided Manufacturing skills will take place at Milton District High School (396 Williams Ave, Milton) on the same day due to facility needs.
“This unique Halton wide event is an amazing opportunity for students to become truly engaged in learning through Technological Education programs which is one of the most important factors in creating tomorrow’s workforce,” says Veronica Kleinsmith, Instructional Program Leader, Technological Education for the Halton District School Board. “Technological Education is at the forefront of preparing our students for the careers of the future. This event, which involves the hard work and dedication of so many teachers, helps students hone their skills and compete in a friendly environment.”
A Career Showcase will take place during the Halton Skills Competition, with representatives from the community, and business, industry and education sectors in attendance.
“It is highly encouraging and motivating for students to see the tremendous industry and corporate support of their educational path and to see the many educational and career opportunities available after high school,” says Kleinsmith.
Students successful in the skills competition will go on to represent the Halton District School Board at the Ontario Skills Competition in Toronto from May 6-8, and then on to the Skills Canada National Competition in Halifax, Nova Scotia from May 28-29.
