Who is eligible?

Any student entering Grades 11 or 12 who currently attends a school full-time and is a pupil in good standing for entire year in the Halton District School Board can apply or be selected to be a School Trustee.  They must demonstrate involvement in school, co-curricular or community activities and have written consent from their school principal and their parents or guardians if under 18 years of age.

What do Student Trustees do?

A Student Trustee is a representative of the students in their board at the board table. They vocalize the opinions of the students and strive to make change using the student voice. There are three main responsibilities for Student Trustees:

  1. Running Student Senate (once a month from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.)
  2. Attending Board Meetings (twice a month from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.)
  3. Attending the Ontario Student Trustee Association’s (OSTA-AECO) conferences, as well as being an active member of the organization

Student Trustees have two seats on the Halton District School Board. These students provide the student voice on issues at Board meetings, Board events, conferences and much more. Student Trustees also chair the Halton District School Board Student Senate composed of students from schools across Halton.  As representatives of the region's student voice, Student Trustees can become members of the Ontario Student Trustee's Association (OSTA). OSTA enables students to provide input on Ontario youth needs to those who set up the education mandate.

What is the HDSB Student Senate?

We're a group of passionate leaders from public schools across the Halton District School Board. We meet once a month to provide the student perspective on board issues and to voice the questions and concerns of Halton students. The Student Trustees relay these perspectives to the Board of Trustees to ensure that students are being represented. Each year, we also organize and run the Halton Youth Leadership Symposium, a conference for Halton students.
